Hot Glassmaking by Leading Designers in NYC
May 17-June 3
The Corning Museum of Glass brings the live glassmaking experience beyond the walls of the Museum in GlassLab, a new initiative that pairs master glassmakers with some of the most creative minds working in design today. Created in collaboration with the Vitra Design Museum, GlassLab debuted at Design Miami in December 2007. In this dynamic forum, leading designers work with glassmakers and use the immediacy of glassmaking to rapidly prototype their design ideas. Partnerships with the Vitra Design Museum at the international summer design workshop at Domaine de Boisbuchet served as the genesis for this initiative, which creates a unique opportunity for contemporary designers to work with Museum glassmakers and technicians to push the boundaries of design exploration.
Performances during Design Miami 2007 included the participation of Constantin and Lauren Boym, the Campana Brothers, Matali Crasset, Paul Haigh, and Sigga Heimis.
GlassLab brings the ancient processes and skills of glassmaking together with creative and innovative minds in the design world. Contemporary designers, working with Corning Museum of Glass glassmakers in a unique mobile hot glass studio, have the rare opportunity to use the immediacy of hot glassmaking as a catalyst for innovation, rapidly prototyping their design concepts using glass.
