Episode III Teaser Poster Revealed

Episode III Teaser Poster Revealed

Each fall before the May release of a Star Wars film, fans have two things on their mind: teaser poster and teaser trailer. Now, the first of these wish-list items is a reality, as starwars.com reveals the striking new teaser poster for Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.

Next week, the teaser poster and banner for Episode III will start appearing in movie theaters in North America and elsewhere. This bold design is now available on exclusive collectibles from StarWarsShop.com.F or the first time ever, Lucasfilm is making available to fans a double-sided printing of the poster, the exact same format that's shipping to theaters. The poster image is also available on a mug and a T-shirt.

While visitors to starwars are kept informed of the latest Episode III developments as they happen, the general movie-going public's first introduction to Episode III is in the form of the teaser poster. As a first visual representation of a film to a broad audience, a teaser poster must efficiently convey the main spirit and theme of a film, but leave the full depth of characters and relationships for the release poster several months later.

Like the teaser posters for The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, this one features Anakin Skywalker. Hayden Christensen is depicted as the heroic Jedi warrior, with the encroach

The Animation Flood Too Much Shrek

The Animation Flood: Too Much Shrek

Weeks or months from now, there is a good chance that DreamWorks Animation's decision to go public Thursday will look not only smart, but pure genius.

That's because movie studios big and small are racing to cash in on what has become a sizzling hot genre: animated films, particularly ones based on computer-generated images.

A dozen or more such films are in the works through 2006. But box office analysts say the deluge risks turning off the movie-going masses. Given the exorbitant costs of making and marketing an animated movie, more than a few studios could soon take a bath.

DreamWorks Animation's initial public offering, which raised $812 million and started trading Thursday at 39 percent above the offering price, showed Hollywood that there is space for another animation studio besides industry leader Pixar Animation Studios.

"I don't think it is a one-company industry," said Dennis McAlpine, an independent media stock analyst. "There's room for both DreamWorks and Pixar to thrive."

What about a third player? "That," said McAlpine, "will be hard."

New MySQL is Ready

New MySQL is Ready

The latest point release of MySQL database is now good to go, the company said Wednesday.

MySQL 4.1, available in both open-source and commercial versions, promises more enterprise-worthy features and faster query performance through support for subqueries, according to MySQL, Cupertino, Calif.

The database, which runs on Windows, Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, HP-UX, and AIX, is now downloadable.

The release adds "extensive" Unicode support and new GUI installer and configuration wizards for Windows and Linux to ease setup. There is also new OpenSSL-encrypted client/server communications and support of subqueries and derived tables, which should speed search and queries, the company said in a statement.

MySQL has won a devoted following among the open-source crowd, and is being bolstered with more enterprise-ready capabilities.

Last April at the company's annual conference, it rolled out its road map. A year ago, the company bought Alzato with its clustering technology.

Yahoo Search Goes Mobile

Yahoo Search Goes Mobile

Yahoo Inc. for the first time is letting mobile phone users query its search engine, giving them access to conventional Web results, local business listings and related information, as well as images, such as pictures and maps, the company said Wednesday.

The service will launch Wednesday on several U.S. carriers. Users can access the services from a data-enabled phone by going to mobile yahoo com.

The mobile data market is now taking off, but simplification is key to capturing mobile users, said Yahoo Chief Operating Officer Dan Rosensweig, who announced the mobile search service in a speech at the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association Wireless IT & Entertainment trade show in San Francisco.

Out of 137 million people who use the Web in the U.S., more than 30% also use mobile data, Rosensweig said. Meanwhile, 79% of Yahoo Web site U.S. users also have a mobile phone, he added.

The service also features "search shortcuts" that let users request specific information, such as weather data, stock quotes, sport scores and flight information.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo had previously provided mobile-phone access to its e-mail and instant messaging services.
