Asianet Launches Animation Show

Asianet Launches Animation Show

Malayalam channel Asianet has launched its first-ever animation show, based on the 13th century Arab folklore character Mulla Naseeruddin. The tele-strip will air three times a week.

Channel officials say that the three-minute capsule show set in the Arab background is targeted at the Gulf viewers. The show will be aired at 3 pm in India (1:30 pm UAE) with a repeat telecast at 11:30 pm (10 pm UAE).

According to Asianet chief producer M R Rajan, a group of young expats living in Dubai is behind the show. The show titled Mulla Kathakal (Mulla stories) is produced by Ishaq Madayi for Crayon Visual Media, which has offices in Kerala and UAE.

The animation is being handled by the Kochi-based Centre for Animation Technology (CAT).

It can be said that the Malayalam TV market, known for the amount of humour-based content it churns out, is slowly hugging the animation genre. Earlier Asianet had telecast the Malayalam version of the animation show The Adventures of Tenali Raman.

Asianet's competitor Kairali TV recenlty launched a five-minute animation strip titled Kunjammaan (Uncle Kunj). Kairali had debuted in the animation realm some time back with the animation series Bobanum Moliyum (Boban & Moly).

Multiplay Choice N-Gage QD

Multiplay Choice: N-Gage QD

Playing against a computer program can be fun, but pitting your skills against a human is infinitely more satisfying provided you're the one with the highest score when "Game Over" flashes on the screen.

Until now multiplayer gamers have been limited to playing from home PCs, consoles or internet cafes. This is set to change, because this rapidly growing form of entertainment has found a home nestled in your pocket, with both Nokia and 3 delivering multiplayer games via their mobile phones.

To take on fellow Nokia owners, you and your opponents will need to be armed with the silicon taco known as the N-Gage QD, which has more in common with a GameBoy than a mobile phone. All players must also own a copy of the chosen game. The approach by 3 doesn't have these limitations, because most of its handsets support online gaming.

Its games can also be downloaded free in minutes, although there's a catch: 3's online game charges players 50 cents for every seven lives. Considering it took us just three minutes to see these lives blasted into oblivion by our ruthless foes, suddenly the 3 service doesn't look quite so cheap.

These two companies also use different methods to send your virtual bullets over their networks. Obviously 3 uses its speedy, but limited coverage, 3G service, while the N-Gage has to make do with the s

Digital Kimonos Draw Modern Crowd

Digital Kimonos Draw Modern Crowd

Kimono designer Yuko Iwakuma uses a computer and an ink jet printer to make kimonos with brash new designs which she then sells over the Internet.

Her 'digital kimonos', which she began selling last December, go far beyond the flower and bird designs of tradition, abounding with keyboards, playing-card kings and queens, puppies and apples.

She sold more than 100 kimonos and lighter-weight yukata robes in August alone, an impressive figure considering that the elaborate clothes are worn today only at weddings and special occasions.

Making a killing in the traditional kimono business is not easy.

The market has dropped from 2 trillion yen (S$31 billion) at its peak in the 1980s to a mere 630 billion yen in 2001, according to an industry association.

Producing kimonos the traditional way is labour intensive and time-consuming.

Computerised manufacturing cuts costs and lets people like Ms Iwakuma custom make kimonos for the price of a nice suit, while selling through the Internet avoids Japan's cumbersome - and expensive - distribution system to retail shops.

Digital design and ink-jet printing also allow kimono makers to avoid excess inventory and relieve growing concerns about a shortage of skilled hand-dyers.

Ms Iwakuma uses an Apple computer to design her kimonos and sashes.

She says the motifs attract women in their 30s who seek inexpens

The Walt Disney Company Names 2004 Disney Legends

The Walt Disney Company Names 2004 Disney Legends

The Walt Disney Company today named the 2004 Disney Legends, recognizing individuals who have contributed creativity, innovation and imagination to Disney's rich heritage.

Walt Disney Company Chief Executive Officer Michael D. Eisner presided over the ceremony, which takes place each year at the Disney Legends Plaza at The Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, Calif.

Since 1923, The Walt Disney Company has been comprised of a collection of talented people who, through many disciplines, have turned dreams into magic.

The 2004 Disney Legends are now among 160 actors, film makers, animators, composers and creative people who have been honored since 1987, when Eisner first established this program of distinction and merit, and actor Fred MacMurray received the first Disney Legend designation.

"Walt Disney's legacy has continued through the passion, creativity and dedication of the individuals recognized today," said Eisner. "We owe so much to this group that represents the best of Disney - their work is the arc that connects Disney's history with our success today."

Honorees participated in a handprint ceremony, creating imprints that will be permanently displayed in bronze at the Disney Legends Plaza. In addition, the honoree or the family of posthumous recipients received a two-foot-tall bronze Disney Legends Award sculpture.

Sims 2 Is Just the Game for Designing People

Sims 2 Is Just the Game for Designing People

Each Sim also has fears to contend with, like rejection, fire or the loss of a loved one. The aspiration model makes Sims 2 a little more game-like than the original, with achievable goals and something akin to a score. But Sims 2 is still essentially a freeform romp, requiring only that you keep your Sims fed, clean and rested. The rest is up to you.

Rachel loves Mike. Mike loves Rachel. Mike also loves Carol and is trying to seduce Alice. Rachel punched Mike and wept hysterically when she saw him flirt with Alice, which was a little hypocritical since she is also having an affair with Carol. Surprisingly, Ted, a child adopted by Rachel and Mike, seems to take all this in stride.

Sims 2, a much enhanced version of the life-simulation game from Maxis, is the video-game answer to reality television shows like "The Real World" and "Big Brother." Like those shows, Sims 2 allows the lives of its characters to unfold in moments of chaos and carnality.

But unlike television, in which the audience is confined to the role of passive viewer, the game puts you into the action in the role of a god. And not a distant, magnanimous god, but one of those petty Roman gods who amuse themselves by toying with people.

A sequel to one of the most successful video games ever, Sims 2 once again seems like a little girl's dream of a doll-house come to life, but this t
