Design and Visual Effects Boutique Synthesis Gets Inside a Never Flat Basketball

What does the inside of Spalding's new Never Flat basketball look like?

As envisioned by Philadelphia's design/visual effects house Synthesis it is a lush, complex, 3D animated world that realistically and compellingly depicts the "Pressure Retention Technologies" that allows these unique basketballs to retain their bounce ten times longer then ordinary basketballs.

The new :30 spot, which stars Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce, was created by agency Winstanley Associates, Lenox, MA and directed by Christian Hoagland of Redtree Productions, Boston, MA.

"It was up to us to represent how these larger molecules keep the smaller ones inside the ball," says Synthesis Creative Director Aaron Beaucher.

"They gave us some information about the technology and let us go.

We came up with this 3D animated gelatinous wall of spherical molecules.

The look required literally millions of 3D particles and huge renders.

Particle animation is always a challenge to control, and that interior wall alone took a long time to complete."

Shot in HD, the spot begins with a stormy sky flashing ominously over a barren landscape littered with partially deflated basketballs.

A hooded figure steps into the grim scene, identified only by the single word stenciled across the back of his sweatshirt.

As Pierce looks up, a fully

Buck Kicks it to ESPNs World Cup Coverage

Buck Kicks it to ESPN's World Cup Coverage

Los Angeles-based motion graphics and production company BUCK produced an epic and illustrative open as part of ESPN's upcoming coverage of soccer's World Cup championship tournament.

The open is part of a complete show package that includes graphic elements detailing team match-ups, player transitions, transitional elements and various openings for different segments within each tournament game broadcast by ESPN.

"This was our first project with ESPN and it was very exciting for us," says Ryan Honey, Creative Director and Principal at BUCK.

"Essentially, the package we provided contains all graphical elements that ESPN will be showing during the World Cup.

They were looking for an international, almost Olympian feel that would convey to American viewers just how popular soccer is throughout the rest of the world."

As a German stadium full of fans looks on, a muscular footballer employs some complex footwork before kicking a soccer ball downfield.

In a scene more painterly than athletic, the ball begins to come apart in the air, transforming into falling bits of confetti as it does so.

The confetti falls down upon a group of fans enthusiastically waving the flags of their respective countries before transitioning to a Brazilian beach.

Imaginary Forces Feels the Love in Main Titles for The Break-Up

Imaginary Forces Feels the Love in Main Titles for The Break-Up

Love is swell! Especially when you have lots of photos to document how your affection has grown for each other.

Imaginary Forces (IF) recently designed the whimsical main title sequence for the Universal Pictures comedy "The Break-Up" starring Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston as a couple who is doing just that.

Working closely with Director Peyton Reed, Executive Producer Peter Billingsley, and Producer Vince Vaughn, IF Creative Director Brian Mah created the main titles, which weave together photographs to establish the couple's loving relationship prior to the break up.

"The break up happens early on in the movie so the onus was on the title sequence to tell the story of this couple getting along for a two-year period," explains Director Peyton Reed.

"As soon as the sequence finishes, people have to relate to these characters and understand what the nature of their relationship was like through these normal photos.

The challenge was to create an open that was simple and real in its storytelling, but wasn't visually dull.

Imaginary Forces did a great job in figuring out the best way to coordinate these stills and to bring kinetic movement and interactivity to them."

"The Break-Up" tells the story of Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) and Gary (Vince Vaughn) who call it quits - and engage in mental warfare to force
