Smoke & Mirrors NY Welcomes Senior Flame Artist Dan Kelly

Smoke & Mirrors New York announced the addition of senior Flame Artist, Dan Kelly.

Dan most recently served at New York-based rhinofx as a Senior Inferno Artist, leveraging his extensive background in both commercial and long-form VFX projects.

Since arriving at SMNY, he has already completed work on a Mercedes spot as well as the latest Feist music video with Patrick Daughters.

Before moving to New York, Dan worked at Toronto-based Spin VFX as Senior Visual Effects Supervisor working on features and commercials.

While at the London visual effects house, Cinesite, Dan worked on The Goblet of Fire, the fourth installment of the Harry Potter series.

In 2005 he led a commercial team as a Senior VFX Artist at Technicolor Creative Services in Canada.

There, Kelly worked on notable spots for BMW, Motorola, Nokia, Stella Artois, and Ford, and also contributed to the film Saw II. Kelly began his career in animation at London's Moving Picture Company (MPC).

Working on spots for Guinness, Heineken, and Smirnoff Red, as well as music videos for Björk and Kylie Minogue, and contributed to the hit BBC series, Hustle.

Dan also worked as Principal Partner and Creative Director at Think Creative, a prestigious design and marketing agency in London after studying Fine Art and Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins College.

Y&R and Zoic Team to Develop Craftsman Crew Chief

After successfully creating the Mini Cooper robot for Crispin Porter & Bogusky and the design of the new Terminator T-888 for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Zoic Studios was the natural choice by agency Y&R to design and bring Craftsman tools to life as the ultimate NASCAR "Crew Chief."

The innovative spot opens on the intensive driving action of a NASCAR cup race.

On the sideline, the Craftsman Crew Chief pulls himself together - literally - in a calculated and calm manner, assembling the arsenal of tools, which comprise his invincible body.

Then he waits for the right time to leap into the action and save the day.

He is a single man crew, comprised of everything he needs to execute whatever the perils of the race throw his way.

And he can deliver in record time.

"This was a project that offered an amazing creative partnership between us and Y&R.

It is one of the most compelling and exciting commercials to come out of our studio," says Zoic Creative Director Loni Peristere, who also served as director of the commercial.

"The agency presented a smart brand concept that was rich in narrative and directly related to the end "tool" user in a fun and energetic way."

With his distinctive brand of lifestyle art, Superdeux (aka Sebastien Roux) has spent the past ten years hopping the gap between the art and commercial worlds, producing slick motion graphics, funky characters, and pop-tastic logos for major brands such as MTV and Sony, while at the same time developing his own popular series of vinyl toys.

His work has been featured in books and magazines across Europe, Asia, and North America, and has drawn crowds to galleries in France, Canada, and the U.S.

Click 3X Forges All Original Spot for Ford Trucks

New York-based Click 3X recently shot, designed, and provided the VFX for a :30 spot for Ford F150 Trucks out of TeamDetroit-JWT.

The spot features liquid chrome oozing through a cobblestone street, collecting then reshaping to form the chrome wheels, running boards, grille, and bumpers of the new XLT F150.

With a longstanding relationship with both the client and agency, Click 3X was approached to produce the full creative solution, working on the entire process from original concept and design to live action, post and finishing.

The breadth of this project highlights Click 3X's position as a full-service creative solutions partner, with the capability to work with a client on every aspect of production, from concept to completion.

"Initially, our creative vision was to use a combination of effects, 2D images, and live action to take the truck straight from the board designs to the screen-knowing exactly what we could do in the studio with the effects certainly helped in the development of the creative concept," said Director Peter Corbett.

"The process for this spot was actually pretty intricate and innovative, as we shot in 35mm film as well as special hi-res stills for 32-bit HDRI, created back plates and did pre-vis for all the motion, built a 3D background with hi-res stills to work with both the live-action and CG, and output everything into HD."

Design and motion graphics agency Nth Degree has named distinguished brand and design consultant Bob English to its team as Executive Creative Director.

Prior to joining Nth Degree full-time, English's creative alliance with Nth Degree led to successful collaborations on the global graphics packaging for Live Earth, the branding of the Discovery Kids' prime time block @DK, and an ID campaign for TCM.

"Our experience working with Bob has been so positive and successful, that bringing him on as our Creative Director was an obvious decision.

His aesthetic will help further establish Nth Degree as a world class design agency that is equally comfortable tackling live-action projects as we are motion graphics," says David Edelstein, Managing Director, Nth Degree.

During his distinguished career, English's unique vision has helped launch network packages for PBS, Disney and Toon Disney channels, Country Music Television, Fox Movie Channel, CBS's Eye on People, Court TV, Discovery Geschichte, Lifetime Movie Network, and ABC's "One Saturday Morning" block.

He supervised the cross-platform re-launch of ZDF, the re-branding of CBC, and also created a prestigious redesign package for ARTE, Europe's leading arts and culture network.
