Label Tronic Studio 3HD Branding Spot Presides Over Retail Marriage of Sony Style and Comcast Labs

Tronic Studio 3HD Branding Spot Presides Over Retail Marriage of Sony Style and Comcast Labs

Tronic Studio's 3HD theatrical trailer-style spot, "Emerge" plays across one the world's biggest hi-definition LED screen in the Comcast Center in Philadelphia to herald the launch of the retail marketing partnership between Sony Electronics and Comcast Labs.

The Tronic spot co-brands Comcast Cable and Sony Electronics as they inaugurate their partnership in a 3,400-square-foot retail experience, which opened last week in the lower-level concourse of Comcast's downtown Philadelphia headquarters.

Tronic also produced three HD product spots, which play across numerous screens in the retail showcase, to explain the perfect marriage of Sony hardware and Comcast cable, phone and internet services.

For Tronic, the project marks a continuation of its move into OOH, high- end HD retail content.

"The challenge was to link two distinct companies together in a coherent voice," said Vivian Rosenthal, co-founder and art director for Tronic Studio, whose NY City-based animation studio has produced several HD out-of-home videos, including two recent spots for the Sony Style stores.

"The Sony Comcast co-branding spot has the feeling of a trailer for a feature film that brings the brands together in an uplifting, aspirational way that captures one's imagination and hits at the converging technologies they offer."

Dormitorium an Exhibition of Film Decors by the Quay Bros

Dormitorium: an Exhibition of Film Decors by the Quay Bros

Parsons The New School for Design will present Dormitorium: An Exhibition of Film Decors by the Quay Bros., from July 15 through October 4, 2009.

The exhibition explores the macabre fantasy world of twin brothers Stephen and Timothy Quay through the highly detailed miniature sets of their influential stop-motion animations.

Organized by the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, Dormitorium represents the first time the sets of the London-based Quays have been exhibited in North America.

The Quay Brothers have built a cult following with their dark, moody films, which are heavily influenced by Eastern European film, literature, and music and often feature disassembled dolls and no spoken dialogue.

The exhibition will combine 11 rarely seen, collaboratively designed miniature decors from some of the Quays' most prominent works, as well as continuous screenings of excerpts from several of the films.

"Exploring the design process in relation to how we construct narratives is an important part of a Parsons education, and Dormitorium is an exhibition that goes beyond retrospective to really investigate the nature of creative work," said Lydia Matthews, the dean of academic programs at Parsons The New School for Design.

Click Helps Build an Interactive CG World for Go Army

Click Helps Build an Interactive CG World for Go Army

In collaboration with MRM and Smuggler for the U.S. Army, Click 3X and ClickFire Media designed and animated interactive elements for A World Like No Other, a CG military base complete with marching squadrons, tank battalions, and screen-shaking Apache helicopter flyovers.

The Click team provided the 3D animation to help transport visitors through and across the base in an immersive, full motion journey, combining life-like graphics with MRM's interactive hotspots linked to live action webisodes enhancing the realism and depth of the online experience.

Each hotspot identifies the on-base location of key members of the Army team, from Special Forces and field artillery to military police and astronauts, while the corresponding live action pieces provide the back story and support explaining their crucial roles in the Army.

These transitions through the animated base and into the webisode locations are the key components to the site's cutting-edge multi-sensory action and showcase the future of integrated online experiences.

Click's team of designers and animators collaborated to enhance and enliven the interactive footage for seamless integration provided by MRM into the multimedia site.

The dirt-ridden, rough look and feel of the visuals helps fully capture the exhilarating base experience, inspired by actual military locations in Kentucky and Colorado.

Water Goes Bananas at DMG and Fusion CI Studios

Water Goes Bananas at DMG and Fusion CI Studios

Fusion CI Studios and Department of Motion Graphics pooled talents recently to create this lively spot for New Zealand creative agency, Sugar and client, Fonterra.

Fonterra's new "smart" water, "Whole", leaps into the air then transforms itself into shape after shape - first a brain, then a bridge, then bananas - displaying a vigorous character and life of its own.

"From the moment we first laid eyes on the storyboard, we knew this was going to be one of the most challenging projects we had ever undertaken at DMG," says Linds Redding, Creative Director.

"If we had grasped at the time, just how challenging - we might well have thought twice about saying 'yes' with such unseemly haste.

From the outset, we realised we were going to need some specialist help and we were lucky enough to fall into league with the brilliant Mark Stasiuk of Fusion CI Studios in Santa Monica, California."

CG fluids remain among the most confounding effects to achieve natural looks and behaviors, and to push that even further by morphing cg fluid into specific shapes demands advanced skill.

Mark Stasiuk, co-owner and CG sup at Fusion CI Studios was very excited about DMG's project as fluid morphing behavior is a technology his studio has been developing.

To add the challenge of applying these new methods to a spot where fluid is a mischievous & clever main character was exhilarating... if not daunting.

2009 Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmakers Award Winners

2009 Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmaker's Award Winners

Jerome Sable and Michael Montgomery, graduate students from the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, have won the 2009 Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmaker's Award for their dance-themed short film entitled, "Meanwhile..."

Sable and Montgomery will receive $10,000 and their film will be seen later this year on over 21,000 movie screens in theaters that serve Coca-Cola products.

"It's always difficult to choose the winner because we receive so many creative submissions," said Kathleen Ciaramello, Group Vice President Strategic Partnership Marketing, Coca-Cola North America.

"We selected Jerome and Mike's film because they brought together the fun of movie-going and the simple pleasure of enjoying an ice cold Coca-Cola in a very clever way."

From the more than 200 scripts and storyboards submitted, 10 finalists were selected and given $7,500 for production costs to create their short films.

While Sable and Montgomery have independently placed among the top 10 finalists in previous Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmaker's Award competitions, their decision to team up this year proved to be the winning combination.

The 50-second spot was written and directed by Sable and produced by Montgomery.

"Going to school in Los Angeles gives us great access to the entertainment industry and we knew if we wanted to win this competition we'd need to pull out all the stops," said Sable.
