SIGGRAPH Announces Winners of 2008 Computer Animation Festival

SIGGRAPH Announces Winners of 2008 Computer Animation Festival

SIGGRAPH announced the Computer Animation Festival's Best of Show, Jury Award, Student Prize, Audience Prize, and a special Well Told Fable Prize for SIGGRAPH 2008, the 35th International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques.

"The caliber of submissions this year was truly phenomenal, which made the jury's job especially difficult," said Jill Smolin, SIGGRAPH 2008 Conference Entertainment Director.

"The winners truly showcase what is possible today and provide a glimpse into what artists can achieve in the future.

Really, the only limitation is the imagination."

Award and prize winners were chosen from hundreds of submissions from around the globe, presented by both professional studios and students alike.

An expert panel of jury members selected the winners for exemplary use of computer-generated imagery, animation, and storytelling.

SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Award Recipient Ken Perlin and a host of industry presenters recognized the nominees and winners in a fun, lively awards ceremony.

Rock Paper Scissors and a52 Launch Elastic

Rock Paper Scissors and a52 Launch Elastic

The principals behind Los Angeles-based editorial company Rock Paper Scissors (RPS) and visual effects company a52 announced the launch of a new, full-service, design-driven company named Elastic.

To support their new venture, RPS and a52 co-founders Angus Wall and Linda Carlson have hired Alex Gorodetzki as Elastic's executive producer and Trevor Shepard as its creative director of design.

"Elastic has grown out of the needs of our clients and the desires of our artists to make pictures and tell stories," said Wall, who together with Carlson launched RPS in 1992 and a52 in 1995.

"It's great to operate as a little studio and produce projects from beginning to end.

RPS, a52 and Elastic will be working as autonomous companies and a complete digital production studio." Elastic will represent all in-house editors and VFX artists from RPS and a52 for projects ranging from title to type design.

"Both Trevor and Alex have created a lot of high-profile projects requiring hybrid production approaches," Wall added.

"Alex has facilitated projects ranging from broadcast network launches to Super Bowl spots.

The plan is for Alex to work closely with a52 EP Ron Cosentino and RPS EP CL Weaver to present a unified force in offering our clients creative solutions."

Shapeways Creator: Shapeways Launches Next Generation DIY Online Product Customization

Shapeways, a new platform and global community for 3D-design and production, takes a major step towards the next generation of consumer co-creation with the announcement of the Shapeways Creator Engine.

For the first time, consumers without 3D modeling skills can shape, mash, imprint anddesign their own 3D products in just a few mouse clicks at Shapeways website.

From lamps with a personal message to fruit bowls linking back to memorable moments, the Shapeways Creator Engine has a beta library of predesigned product templates which is expected to grow rapidly over 2009.

"We recognize the desire of consumers who want to own or give something that is unique and has their special, personal touch,"commented Peter Weijmarshausen, CEO of Shapeways.

"With the Creator Engine, now anyone can participate in the artistic process and create something that is truly a reflection of their own needs and tastes. With the Creator Engine, we have broken the currently existingtrade-off between freedom of design and the complexity of the design process."

"In today's world, consumers are universally less and less satisfied with the choice that the usual shops offer," said Jochem de Boer, CMO of Shapeways.

"Instead, they are looking for ways to reflect their personal identity in the objects that they choose to have around them, or that they carefully select as a unique gift for their loved ones."

Behavior Gives New Design to AARP Web Site & Bulletin

AARP, one of the largest and most influential member organizations in the U.S., with 39 million people and growing, approached Behavior Design to create its new cutting-edge web site and online publication.

As a champion for social change, helping people navigate ageless realities, AARP wanted to deliver a market-leading online presence for its existing and future members.

Realizing the need to develop a visual design that aligns with the changing needs of its audiences, AARP hired Behavior Design to incorporate web-based information and tools to reflect this change.

The re-branding was aimed at infusing a youthful energy into its position as the ultimate user-advocate.

The organization also desired to take full advantage of Web 2.0 and deliver a well-rounded and energetic user-centered website.

Behavior, in harmony with AARP's business objectives, began the project with a complete overhaul of the site's look and feel.

As a result of moving toward a more elegant aesthetic, the new site conveys a fresh and engaging tone.

The enhanced image was further complimented by a reorganization of the site's valuable content.
