Lucasfilm Animation Singapore: Animation Comes AliveSuddenly, a galaxy far far away seems much closer to animation student Joanne Ng.
The second-year Temasek Polytechnic student is excited about the entry of Lucasfilm animation studio and its potential to power up Singapore's fledgling industry.
'I mean, he's the guy behind Star Wars. And to work there, your standard must be really high,' says the 19-year-old.
Lucasfilm Ltd is the entertainment company founded in 1971 by George Lucas, who created the epic Luke Skywalker-Darth Vader universe in soon-to-be-six Star Wars movies.
Industrial Light & Magic, the special effects arm of Lucasfilm, has won 14 Oscars.
No wonder Ng and her classmates are in awe. When she applied for the course two years ago, students in her class were looking at a future linked to independent production studios here.
Industry players estimate that there are about 50 to 60 production studios in town churning out short films, corporate videos and the occasional advertisement. For those involved in primarily 2D and 3D animation, the number is around 10.
This changed on Aug 3, when the Economic Development Board (EDB) and Lucasfilm announced the development of Lucasfilm Animation Singapore (LAS).
