Website Design Winner Faces DisqualificationWeb and multimedia solution company Grafium is threatened with disqualification and the loss of its title "the most creative website," two days after it was chosen as the winner for web design innovation in the Lebanese Web Awards 2004, held last week.
Grafium, which won first place for its website grafium com, turned out to have slightly modified an Argentinean company's website digitalbrand com.
"I was completely shocked to know that my company's site was a modified replica from another website," said Grafium's owner, who asked that his name not be mentioned.
However, "I acknowledge my company's mistake and have taken a responsible step in this regard" to right this wrong, he said.
To fix the problem, Grafium's site read on Tuesday that "This website is off-line for updating."
"I work with over 15 freelance designers," said Grafium's owner, explaining that he cannot monitor all their work and check their designs against millions of web pages.
"It turned out that one of my freelance designers took the design from an Argentinean company's web page thinking that no one will know," he said.
Grafium's owner sarcastically said that the designer in charge of creating the new website, "was inspired more than the usual from the Argentinians' website."
