Game Design is a Serious JobThe Philippines has gone from providing world-class software developers to digital animators, and lately, English-speaking call center agents. However, in the next few years, a small albeit growing number of game developers in the country believe that the country is in a position to become Southeast Asia’s center for game design and development.
Consider Ranulf Goss who is currently a global database administrator at TrendLabs in Manila. By day, Goss deals with customers of the anti-virus firm Trend Micro. But on the side, he teaches game design and production at the De La Salle College of St. Benilde (DLSU-CSB).
“My current day job is Global Database Administrator at Trend Micro. As a part time job, I teach game design and production classes at CSB,” said Goss.
The DLSU-CSB is currently offering game design as a subject. But soon, India-born computer school NIIT will start offer gaming development courses to Filipinos, according to Goss.
“De La Salle is also planning to offer courses in game development,” ; he said.
For now though, teaching game design to Filpino students poses some challenges.
