Fall Textile Symposium : Japanese Style and the Culture of ClothLike members of The Textile Museum, the people of Japan are enamored with textiles, which have been an integral and valued part of Japanese life since ancient times.
The TM's annual fall textile symposium, Japanese Style and the Culture of Cloth, explores the role of textiles in Japan and the variety of textile dyeing techniques for which Japan is known.
Designed to complement the exhibition Rozome Masters of Japan, the symposium begins with a festive exhibition reception on the evening of Friday, October 21.
Featured speakers for the program on Saturday, October 22 include: Daniel Walker, Director of The Textile Museum, who will introduce the program; Mary Dusenbury, Adjunct Research Associate at the Center for East Asian Studies of the University of Kansas, who will discuss cloth and culture in historic Japan; Betsy Sterling Benjamin, author, faculty of Massachusetts College of Art and Exhibition Curator of Rozome Masters of Japan, who will explore the history and current practice of Japanese resist-dyeing; Jack Lenor Larsen, weaver, designer and founder of LongHouse Reserve, who will present a personal reflection on the influence of Japanese style; Yoshiko I. Wada, an independent scholar and author from Berkeley, California who will discuss contemporary Japanese shibori;
