Cartier Design ExhibitionA major exhibition from The Art of Cartier Collection will take place at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston from October 31, 2004 through March 27, 2005 titled, "Cartier design viewed by Ettore Sottsass."
"Cartier design viewed by Ettore Sottsass" includes dramatic diadems, brooches, necklaces, rings and bracelets, as well as accessories such as cigarette cases, writing instruments, precious clocks and watches from various periods in the work of the family company established back in 1847.
Art Director of the Cartier Design exhibition is the maestro of Italian design, Ettore Sottsass. In making his selection of some 200 objects from the Cartier Collection, Sottsass sees the jewels primarily from the designer's viewpoint. "I tend to ignore everything about an object apart from its design," he says when explaining the criteria underlying his choice. "I care nothing for the social importance of pieces or their material value. My choice was made on the basis of colors and the quality of design." His own creations encompass numerous classics of industrial and furniture design as well as countless series of ceramics, glass items and photographs, not to mention travel journals.
