It's never easy for a fashion designer to seize the creative reins at a historic house.
The newest apparel interpretations are always judged against what the namesake and subsequent hired-gun designers did.
What's tough is staying true to the brand while injecting it with a dose of modern, forward-looking newness.
And that's just what Patrick Robinson intends to do for Paris-based Paco Rabanne.
"I think we've been attracting a woman that has a pretty confident, sexy outlook, but there's something about her that's very strong," said Robinson, 39, from Shanghai, China, where on Tuesday he introduced the Rabanne line during the city's Fashion Week.
"The way we've positioned the line at this early time is that the clothes are jewels.
People are buying pieces that are unique and personal."
The designer will visit Saks Fifth Avenue tonight to present his Resort '05 collection as a benefit for the nonprofit beautification group Gateway Green.
But don't expect Robinson to raid Paco Rabanne archives for ideas.
He's looking ahead -- especially after visiting Shanghai.
"There's something about it that feels like the future," he said.
"The young Chinese here, they look like they're going to change the world.
"Robinson became an industry darling during stints at Giorgio Armani in Milan, Italy, and then

Vera Wang is known for her American bridal empire.
But in Shanghai she achieved recognition that her parents could never have imagined when they left their native China for a new life in 1947.
Wang received the China Fashion Award or CFA as International Fashion Designer of the Year.
Born in New York in 1949, she has become the first designer with Chinese roots to be globally recognized.
Wang, 56, also opened on Sunday a bridal boutique, The Perfect Wedding, in Shanghai's Pudong Shangri-La hotel.
It offers back to her heritage the stylish, serene, softly colored outfits that have brought a new sophistication to the white wedding world.
And she is getting to know the ever-changing city, where her father, the son of the war minister under Chiang Kai-shek, brought her back to his hometown for the first time two years ago.
"He showed me tradition, the Ming empire, what another China was," she says.
"I saw modern China.
I expected bicycles and Mao suits and what I saw was a pre-Tokyo China with a hunger for Western culture.
It is a wonderfully exciting period.
It's so fascinating."
Wang's career has been a chameleon change from a childhood as a competitive figure skater (who ultimately dressed Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 Olympics) to her fashion empire of today.

Gucci Group and Mr Sergio Rossi announce today that Mr Sergio Rossi and his family will end their collaboration with the Sergio Rossi brand.
This decision follows the agreements reached between Mr Sergio Rossi and Gucci Group in November 1999 and January 2004, when Gucci Group's ownership of Sergio Rossi went from 70% to 100%.
On that occasion it was anticipated that Mr Rossi would relinquish his personal involvement in the Sergio Rossi brand upon the Gucci Group's acquisition of complete control over the Sergio Rossi brand.
Sergio Rossi and his family founded the company in the 1950's and under their direction the Sergio Rossi brand has become a unique vision of luxury.
In total respect of its strategic plan, the brand will continue to offer unparalleled and exclusive collections designed by expert designers of women's and men's shoes, and accessories.
Isabelle Guichot, Chief Executive Officer of Sergio Rossi, commented 'Mr. Sergio Rossi and his family have played a key role in the luxury shoe sector.
We are incredibly grateful for the valuable contribution they have made to the brand over the years.
We believe that by leveraging the brand's strong foundations and its great potential, the Sergio Rossi brand has all the required assets to achieve its targets.'
