The Rio grande dames showed up en masse for the debut women's show in Rio Fashion by Santa Ephigenia, a snazzy and sleek collection that would not have looked out of place in the Carrousel du Louvre or the Fiera di Milano.
Pre-show, the runway at this exotic city's Modern Art Museum, where all but three of the shows are staged, was packed with local hacks, gossip and TV crews nabbing quotes from local social movers and shakers like Beth Pinto Guimaraes and the leggy black TV anchor Maria Gloria.
Santa Ephigenia's design duo Marco Maia and Luciano Canale claimed no particular inspiration for this Fall Winter 2006 collection, but the impression of a longing for idyllic era of old pre-war Rio was evident that and the memory of seeing elegant women in their youth.
They opened with panache, sending out Caroline Trentini in striking black cable knot mini dress bedecked in a score of black metallic chains.
Maia and Canale know how to keep things simple, and thus avoid the biggest weakness of Brazilian designers - over elaboration.
The pair are also smart colorists - they picked the right hues of dusky gold, faded beige and a wonderful Roman Imperial purple that appeared on suede Fifties wide belts, laser cut top coats in cashmere mixes and a rather brilliant micro bolero knit jacket.

Jeans-maker Levi Strauss has designed a pair of denim trousers with an integrated iPod remote control.
The jeans also provide an iPod dock and retractable earphones.
The hardware tucks into the trouser's special side pocket - neatly side-stepping those bottom-broken back-pocket iPod Nano blues.
The controller is located in the watch pocket, itself tucked into the right front pocket - which is surely going to lead to male users getting some very odd looks while they innocently switch from Whitesnake to Johnny and the Hot Rods.
A more sensible arrangement, perhaps, is ProductM's newly announced TuneBuckle iPod Nano belt.
As the company's name suggests, the iPod clips securely onto the belt's specially designed "high-grade aluminium" buckle holster, ready for easy access. The strap is made of leather and available in black or white.
Levi's hasn't revealed what it will charge for its iPod pants, but it confirmed that the strides are due to go on sale in the autumn under the RedWire DLX brand.
TuneBuckle will cost $49.95 when it ships in the US. ProductM didn't say when TuneBuckle will ship.

Italy and fashion go together. So do athletes and high- performance gear.
What does that mean for team uniforms at the upcoming Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy?
It means sleeker and more subtle styles than the fleece pieces that dominated the U.S. team wardrobe at the 2002 Games in Salt Lake City.
Roots, the company making many of the outfits, calls the overall look "retro futurism."
The uniforms aim to blend high-technology fabrics while using the uniforms of the 1956 Games in Cortina, Italy, as inspiration, explains Roots co-founder Michael Budman.
The outfits for the opening and closing parades include an Alpine-style knit navy sweater with a nylon front panel in white with swaths of two lighter shades of blue and a small Olympic logo patch on one side. The zipper trim is red.
"White is very popular in Italy and the U.S. wore it in '56," Budman says. (For the U.S., the 1956 Olympics were most notable because it was the first time it dominated the figure skating.)
The parade pant is nylon and the style is supposed to be a mix of a formal dress style and a snowboard pant.
Kelly Rae, fashion and grooming director at Stuff magazine, says snowboarders are among the most fickle when it comes to fashion.
"Once they're in the circuit, they're chasing snow around the world - in Europe, in Japan.

Phoebe Philo has resigned as head designer for fashion house Chloé because she wants to spend more time with her family, the company said on Thursday.
Philo, who was crowned British designer of the year in 2004, became Chloé's creative director in 2001, taking over from fellow Briton Stella McCartney.
"My decision to resign is for personal reasons, including especially to spend more time with my new baby in the coming months," Philo said in a statement.
"These past years have been an exciting period for all of us, and I wish the company all the best success in the future."
Philo, born in 1973, returned for the summer ready-to-wear show last October after a season's maternity leave following the birth of her daughter in December 2004.
Chloé, which is part of Swiss luxury good maker Richemont, says Philo brought a new sassy edge to the label.
"We thank Phoebe for her contribution of the continuing growth of the company," said Ralph Toledano, chairman of Chloé.
"Our design team has successfully worked independently on previous collections and I totally trust their creative ability to produce the upcoming Chloé collection," he said.
The company did not say who would succeed Philo.
