Scientists have developed a way to generate electricity by jostling fabric with unbelievably tiny wires woven inside, raising the prospect of textiles that produce power simply by being stretched, rustled or ruffled by a breeze.
The research, described in Thursday's edition of the journal Nature, combines the precision of ultra-small nanotechnology with the elegant principle known as the piezoelectric effect, in which electricity is generated when pressure is applied to certain materials.
While the piezoelectric effect has been understood at least as far back as the 19th century, it is getting creative new looks now, as concerns about energy supplies are inspiring quests for alternative power sources.
For example, a Japanese railway has experimented with mats, placed under turnstiles, that translate the pressure from thousands of commuters' footfalls into usable power.
French scientists have proposed capturing energy from raindrops hitting a structure with piezoelectric properties.

Quebec is the latest addition to the sophisticated collection of bedding from Nancy Koltes Fine Linens.
This elegant, fashion-forward collection takes its lead from the runways of Paris.
It boasts a very multi-dimensional pattern and a layered effect that mixes feminine stylized floral overlays with backgrounds that are reminiscent of the couture tweeds and heathers found in men's suiting.
Quebec cleverly manages to achieve a textured look though it is very soft and smooth to the touch.
While it is a 3-color yarn dye jacquard, the sophisticated weave actually creates a more complex six-color look.
This collection is available in two colorways.
Black is bold and incorporates a black floral overlay on a background of gray and bordeaux.
Sand has a more classic look, with a light neutral floral on a multi-colored tweed background.
Quebec is designed for top of bed and can be matched with a wide range of the Nancy Koltes solid sheeting.

Kylie Minogue has asked Jean Paul Gaultier to design the outfits for her upcoming tour.
The renowned French designer has already met with the "2 Hearts" singer - who kicks off her European tour "KylieX2008" in Paris on May 6 - to show her his "sophisticated" vision for her stage wardrobe.
Kylie's designer friend William Barker revealed: "We're working with Jean Paul Gaultier on the costumes.
"The outfits are incredibly sophisticated - we are moving on to the next level, which is what she did with her new album 'X'."
Kylie wants Jean Paul - who was behind Madonna's show-stopping outfits for her infamous "Blonde Ambition Tour" in 1990 - to create her a collection of outfits that reflect a more mature stage in her life as she is turning 40 in May.
