The Burton Bluetooth Jacket Wearable Tech by Burton and Motorola

The Burton Bluetooth Jacket: Wearable Tech by Burton and Motorola

When the 2005-06 snow-ready fashion hits the shelves, I predict the first product to fly off them will be Burton's latest wearable tech, a $499 Bluetooth-enabled snowboard jacket they developed with Motorola.

The coat, a techier version of Burton's 2004 iPod jacket, comes complete with a control panel at the wrist (green button to answer, red to hang up), caller ID and headphones in the hood. Drop your iPod into a wired top pocket, your cell into a Bluetooth pocket and control both from your sleeve.

Wanna rock out while chatting with your cross-country bros on the chairlift or keep your digits toasty in their mittens while scrolling through your Black-Runs-Only playlist? Done.

But should you really be doing either? I'm not so sure.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

But I don't see the necessity of having caller ID on your jacket sleeve.

The cool factor, I see. And aren't mothers supposed to be the sensible ones?

I think it's more likely the fathers of invention are dreaming up this my-jacket-can-beat -up-your-jacket line of outerwear.

Avalanche beacon in the sleeve ... iPod in the top pocket ... cell in the left ... camera ... digi-vid ... any room for the snowboarder in there?

Fashion Industry Covets the iPod Factor

Fashion Industry Covets the iPod Factor

Can you imagine putting your address book and photo album on in the morning along with your socks?

Or how about using a 3-D printer to make your own shoes on demand? How about clothes peppered with plastic LEDs that let you change the fabric's pattern at will?

These are just some of the bizarre predictions coming from an unlikely research partnership between the London College of Fashion (LCF), based in London's trendy Soho district, and the staid UK telecoms company BT.

The success of the Apple iPod has proved that technology can also be fashionable.

So the race is on to bring iPod-like ease of use and compelling functionality to the clothes we wear, says Sandy Black, a fashion researcher at LCF.

"The iPod has given a real kick-start to the idea of wearable technology," she says.

"There are already skiing jackets with iPod control switches built into the sleeve material, for instance.

So with BT and others we are investigating technologies the fashion industry can harness to meet consumers' heightened expectations."

Talented Fashion Students Clean Up at NT Fashion Awards

Talented Fashion Students Clean Up at NT Fashion Awards

Charles Darwin University students and a fashion studies lecturer have picked up 10 out of the 12 awards at the 25th annual NT Fashion Awards, including the much-coveted Chief Ministers award.

More than 60 entries were received for the awards night held Saturday 25 June.

Fashion studies student Jaz Andre won the Chief Ministers award for her 'punk graffiti' design - made from recycled bicycle tubes and valve stems. Jaz also incorporated a mix of fabrics, including leather, tulle and mesh in her jacket and skirt ensemble.

Charles Darwin University Visual Arts graduate, Cathy Vanderaa, scooped the pool winning four awards - Territory Lifestyle, Wearable Art, Best Business Practice and the Supreme award. Her designs included gold roo jeans featuring animal skins, but it was her wearable art g-string bikini outfit that won the Supreme award.

Fashion lecturer Trish Evans won the craft award for her skirt and top ensemble, complete with a matching handbag and jewellery.

Ms Evans maintained her tradition of creating wearable designs from unusual media, using 'coloured pencils' to create her designs. Even the pencil shavings were used- encased in the organza wrap.

Originally from Pforzheim, the idea for the instruction as a men's tailor was settled very early in AL's (age-class 1969) mind.

As a teenager he already didn't like the material and cuts of the common clothes, so it was his grandma's turn to help him - she gave him the first entry to tailoring.

This first step was followed by an instruction as men's tailor at the Nuremberg Opera followed by the study of textile art at the Nuremberg Academy of Modern Arts and Fashiondesign in Hamburg.

After moving to Hamburg AL's marked interest in the emotional factor of special fabrics enflamed his love to Terry.

After several exercises and studies with the fluffy material in 2001 the first forms for pets and accessories appeared and are still part of his basic collection.

The funny uniques made of original material from the 50's, 60's and 70's quickly caused the interest of people with a sense for style and the particular.

Even the Lifestyle-Press was impressed and helped at last to bring AL's "Atelier für Frottier" into life.

Lovers about this towel fabric lived all over the world and booked AL's recycling Design. The "Atelier für Frottier" is today located in the most hip shopping mall in Hamburg's Karoviertel, the Marktstr 6. A new Trade Mark was born.

AL's love to Terry began on the flea-market. He soon developed a
