Spectres When Fashion Turns Back

Spectres : When Fashion Turns Back

The Victoria & Albert Museum presents Spectres: When Fashion Turns Back, on view through May 8, 2005.

Spectres sets out to reveal the shadows and experiences that form a 'fashion memory' in contemporary dress.

In showing the hidden, yet haunting, connections between recent fashion and its past, it uses pieces drawn from avant-garde designers, from the V&A fashion collection and from the archive at ModeMuseum in Antwerp.

Set up as a series of fairground attractions, Spectres invites the visitor into a labyrinth of associations: a shadow lantern throws silhouettes, enlarged maquettes look like games for grown-ups, rotating cogs make and break patterns.

In creating this experimental show, fashion curator Judith Clark invited fashion illustrator Ruben Toledo to provide the drawings, avant-garde jeweller Naomi Filmer to create mannequin prosthetics and fashion theorist Caroline Evans to lend quotations that evoke the complexity of dress today.

Tom Ford Back to Fashion

Tom Ford Back to Fashion

One year after his final catwalk bow, the fashion designer Tom Ford yesterday announced his return to the luxury business.

Ford, one of the most successful designers of recent decades, who transformed the ailing Gucci into one of the world's largest and most profitable brands and amassed a personal fortune of over $200m (£106m) in the process, yesterday announced a partnership with another venerable luxury brand.

He is to put his name to fragrance and upmarket beauty products for the 59-year-old cosmetics giant Estee Lauder.

The deal was announced as one element of a new Tom Ford brand, masterminded by Ford and his longtime business partner, Domenico de Sole.

As well as the Lauder deal, which will see a Tom Ford branded Estee Lauder beauty range on sale for Christmas, the Ford brand launches with a sunglasses range, to be manufactured by Marcolin. It is expected that Tom Ford clothing will follow.

Although Ford's background is in fashion, his appeal to Lauder is clear: it was his flair for building brand and image that were the key to his success at Gucci.

He once said he was lucky to have a "mass-market taste", saying that if he liked something, he usually found that millions of other people liked it too.

Fashion Design Stretches across Cultural Divide

Fashion Design Stretches across Cultural Divide

American style met Japanese tradition as students at Parsons School of Design met peers from Tokyo's Yamano College of Aesthetics during a recent design exchange forum at the Manhattan campus.

The Parsons students showed off Western-style garments while the Japanese students explained traditional construction of kimonos. Parsons' teachers brought together the two cultures, demonstrating how to use modern drawing techniques when designing new kimonos.

To be considered a kimono, a garment must be several layers held tightly together by a series of sashes called obi. The outermost kimono and the outermost obi are the most ornate.

Kimonos are now mostly worn for formal occasions and there is a lightweight summer kimono called a yukata that is worn at seasonal festivals, explains David Severance, a U.S. spokesman for Yamano.

A kimono isn't something one throws on like a trench coat. Learning to properly dress oneself in a kimono can take years - something most young Japanese aren't willing to do so they visit a kimono dresser when necessary, Severance explains.

Kimonos are most often made of dyed or hand-painted silk, sometimes with embroidery. They're woven in a variety of ways that produce different textures and the colors range from bright green to muted burgundy.

"Patterns often depict scenes in nature such as

Gwen Stefani is Top Fashion Icon

Gwen Stefani is Top Fashion Icon

Singer Gwen Stefani has knocked Kate Moss off the top of the best dressed list.

The flamboyant star has been crowned Britain's number one fashion icon by style bible Harpers & Queen.

Moss is relegated to third - her only consolation is that she is ranked one place above arch rival Sienna Miller.

No Doubt singer Stefani, 35, is famed for her bold fashion choices, always set off by platinum hair and ruby red lipstick.

She is muse to designer John Galliano and is also a fan of Vivienne Westwood.

Recently she played screen icon Jean Harlow in The Aviator, the Martin Scorsese biopic about Howard Hughes.

Second in the list is stripper Dita Von Teese, partner of shock rocker Marilyn Manson.

Last year's number one Kate Moss drops to third but Sienna Miller is up three places to number four after her trademark boho chic was copied in every High Street in Britain - even inspiring the latest collection from Marks & Spencer.

Handbag Designs Don't Skimp on Details

This spring, handbags and purses serve as fashion statements on their own.

"The right bag can really make your outfit," says Sonya Haber, accessories buyer at Littles Shoes, 5850 Forbes Ave., Squirrel Hill. "It looks great to have an all-black outfit and carry a pink bag or a white outfit with a turquoise bag."

Brightly colored bags and natural fabrics and skins, in sporty, classical or extravagant styles were paraded over the catwalks of major designers' spring collections.
