Handbag Designs Dont Skimp on Details

Handbag Designs Don't Skimp on Details

This spring, handbags and purses serve as fashion statements on their own.

"The right bag can really make your outfit," says Sonya Haber, accessories buyer at Littles Shoes, 5850 Forbes Ave., Squirrel Hill. "It looks great to have an all-black outfit and carry a pink bag or a white outfit with a turquoise bag."

Brightly colored bags and natural fabrics and skins, in sporty, classical or extravagant styles were paraded over the catwalks of major designers' spring collections.

To keep you in the loop, here are some of the local and national trends to watch for:

Body Scanner One Size Fits All

Body Scanner: One Size Fits All

With magazines giving the image that today's ideal body is tall and slim, retailers are creating clothes that will fit that body type.

However, for most people, "tall and slim" is not the case. When shopping for clothes, people face many difficulties. For example, someone with wider hips, but a very slim waist, may not be able to find jeans that fit perfectly.

That is where fashion technology comes in.

"Apparel companies want their sizing systems to look like an ideal person, and then they build a sizing system around that person. But that person doesn't look like most of us," J.T. Clark professor Suzanne Ashdown said.

To rid this frustration, the body scanner has been introduced to the fashion world. Body scanners have been used in the medical field before, but only recently have they begun to be used for fashion purposes.

The body scanner was introduced to help make sizing easier and more accurate. It is a very easy and harmless process that uses both lasers and white lights. Subjects step inside a dark booth and stand with their arms partially out and their legs shoulder-width apart. The lasers or lights go down the body, taking measurements at different angles and different positions. The whole process takes only about 12 seconds.

The scanner will be used for many different purposes in the future.

Fashion and Technology Mesh at Levis Store

Fashion and Technology Mesh at Levi's Store

Finding a pair of jeans that fits has been the ultimate struggle.

Until now.

Levi's Jeans hopes to alleviate that pain with Intellifit, an electronic scanner that recommends jeans based on body measurements.

It's the best invention since toast," said Ahna Fugate, 40, of Ft. Wayne, Ind. Fugate came into the store wearing a corduroy skirt but walked out in her new Boot Cut 515 jeans, one of several types of jeans the Intellifit system recommended for her.

The body scanner, a transparent glass booth, is equipped with a vertical wand that encircles the shopper and emits harmless radio waves.

Those waves measure every inch of the body by detecting water from the skin.

Those measurements are cross-referenced with the customer's personal preferences including fit and cut, providing the shopper with a selection of jeans.

During the 10-second process, shoppers remain clothed and comfortable, a convenience that sets Intellifit apart from other body scanners, said Edward Gribbin, president of Intellifit.

Levi is testing the scanner in stores across the country before making a decision on any permanent installations.

Fashion Fringe 2005

Fashion Fringe 2005

The new Fashion Fringe talent search for 2005 will be underway as from April 12, with its first event in London.

Hopeful successors to the title currently held by Basso & Brooke, the design duo who won the debut competition last September.

They will be able to attend the events free of charge where they will be able to hear leading fashion figures such as British Designer of the Year, Roland Mouret, Julien Macdonald and Burberry designer Christopher Bailey talk about how they found success.

Harvey Nichols will again host the tour, which will go from London to Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Edinburgh before finishing up with its first ever Dublin stop, where Harvey Nicks will also soon have a store.

As each venue holds only 100 attendees, places will be allocated on a first-come-first-s erved basis.

Having won last year, Basso & Brooke are already high on the fashion ladder with their collections manufactured by Aeffe and stocked in some of London's leading stores.

This year's winner will have the chance to show their winning collection on the catwalk at London Fashion Week in September.

Designs on Fashion

Designs on Fashion

A group of Bendigo students is working to put its designs in the spotlight at an upcoming fashion show.

As part of the statewide Fashion Eisteddfod 2005, about 90 Bendigo Senior Secondary College students will compete to win an industry internship and a chance to have their wares on the catwalk.

Fashion teacher Lyn Schroeder said the competition was an opportunity for the students to get an insight into the fashion industry.

She said each student had to come up with a design and construct a storyboard with detailed drawings, fabric samples and costings.

The process is very different to what they learn as part of their VCE studies.

"What the students now have to do is spend a lot of time developing a folio to fulfil their VCE requirements," Ms Schroeder said.

"But this (competition) is actually very much how it works in the industry, so it is great experience for them."

There will be five fashion categories, and 30 finalists from each category will have their design made into a pattern.
