Girls Will Be Boys in London Fashion Shows

Girls Will Be Boys in London Fashion Shows

Girls will be boys, or at least borrow from their closets, as seen in coquettish cross-dressing references sprinkled throughout the autumn/winter 2005-6 collections on show at London Fashion Week.

Each boyish element, from bow ties around necks and waists, to cummerbunds slung like hip belts about skirts, to preppie blazers, was used with coy effect to make the schoolgirl look more seductive and the toreador more tantalizing.

Jessica Ogden's sweetly smiling models on Tuesday dressed in childlike salopettes and smock dresses with big bows, patchwork sweaters and plaid ensembles, with punchy colors lending an summery insouciance to a winter show.

The tomboy trend was also seen in pieces like a chunky knit sweater wrapped with a black tuxedo bow belt, wide-leg trousers cropped mid-calf, and bright checked men's shirts that were revamped with feminine blousy sleeves.

Trends vary widely among the 47 designers on the British catwalk this week, but hints of schoolboys' studiousness, gentlemen's elegance and even some Spanish machismo snuck into expert shows at Temperley, Basso and Brooke and Paul Smith.

England's own Alice Temperley, now that she has been discovered by Hollywood, may have given her last London show, as her sister Mary -- also her buyer -- confirmed to AFP they were considering a move to New York.

Nickel Free Fashion Sales on the Rise

Nickel Free Fashion Sales on the Rise

Nickel allergy, already the most common contact allergy in North America, is on the rise. Nickel, found in a wide array of common household objects like eyeglasses, jewelry, belt buckles, and watches, affects approximately 15% of the population. And each year, the population of nickel allergy sufferers seems to grow in size.

Although the use of nickel in jewelry is banned in most of Europe, the United States still has no measure in place to prevent the use of nickel in objects that come into prolonged and intimate contact with the skin. And with nickel allergy affecting approximately 15% of the population, more and more folks with dermatitis are turning over every stone in search of the elusive nickel free belt or watch.

In 2004, Nonickel website set out to build the world's first itch-free belt. Since its inception, the site has been a magnate for a growing niche community of metal allergy sufferers looking for hypoallergenic accessories they can wear close to the skin.

"I could find nickel free jewelry online, but no matter how hard I hit the search engines, I could not find nickel free belts, nickel free buckles, or nickel free watches" says Jimmy Sepulveda, a nickel allergy sufferer of 15 years. "I simply avoided belts all-together until my dermatologist recommended the site last month". And more and more dermatolo

Black is Back for London Fashion Week

Black is Back for London Fashion Week

Giles Deacon delivered an ensemble of impeccable tailoring, bejewelled and feathered, to London Fashion Week, raising the profile of a somewhat flat five-day run of catwalks with supermodel presence and sober glamour.

Eva Herzigova and another blonde amazon opened the show, one of the most awaited events of the week, in sober but elegant black blazers that presaged a focus on the luxurious suit.

Velvet patterns -- thick chains or diagonal slices -- criss-crossed the matte black background of jackets, skirts and coats, with big Swarovski crystals used to decorate hems and waistbands, or ostrich feathers added on as fringe.

Giles lightened the austerity of all that black with forest green and ochre velvet, in flowing caftan dresses, and shiny topaz and bronze metal discs, sewn together to make the ultimate shimmering party dress.

His autumn/winter 2005-6 clothes, like his much acclaimed spring/summer show before it, still draw inspiration from the 1970s, with sleeveless patterned chiffon gowns, empire-waisted and drawn in with a velvet band, and body-hugging crocheted dresses that gave even slim Herzigova a slinky curve.

Like Jasper Conran, whose steady but unsurprising collections have built him a fan base and successful business in London, Giles indulged more in cosmopolitan ladylike glamour than many

Basso and Brooke Print Magic

Basso and Brooke Print Magic

Englishman Christopher Brooke, 29, an illustrator, and 25-year-old Bruno Basso, a Brazilian designer, are the inaugural winners of last years Fashion Fringe.

They won £100,000 worth of support, a manufacturing deal with AEFFE, free marketing, PR, a studio space, show sponsorship and a guaranteed selling space in Harvey Nichols to start them off on in their business. In return they must show in London for five years.

Why did they win? Their clothes are bold, inventive, sexy and totally unique. These guys make sexy clothes covered with intricately detailed engineered prints. Each pattern they produce is designed with a print in mind, making the finished product a bespoke piece, and in a way, a fashion work of art.

According to Harvey Nichols Buying Director Averyl Oates the collection that won them Fashion Fringe is already selling well at about $1000 for a blouse or dress.

Their debut show as proper designers had it all going on. A soundtrack that rattled the ribcage, models with dominatrix hair and glossy red lips loving every minute, and an expectant crowd waiting to see what London's newly anointed talent would present.

The seventy pieces, consisting of expertly tailored curvy jackets, slim trousers, puff shouldered tunics, blouses, dramatic dresses and capes, owed their drama to Gaultier, Versace and Zandra
