Mini is No1 Fashion Icon

Mini is No.1 Fashion Icon

The mini skirt has been named the most iconic fashion item of all time.

The classic garment beat more recent styles like combats, trainers and ponchos to the number one spot.

Created by designer Andre Courreges and popularised by Mary Quant, the mini skirt became the ultimate symbol of the swinging Sixties.

But it has stood the test of time and today remains an essential part of any woman's wardrobe.

Jeans were the nation's second favourite garment in the poll for posh store Harvey Nichols.

For many years, jeans were only used as work clothes but they gained youth appeal and became cool in the 1950s thanks to stars like James Dean and Marlon Brando.

Third in the list was the timeless little black dress.

Created by Coco Chanel in 1926, the LBD has evolved with each decade to remain as fashionable as ever.

Cowboy boots, recently brought back to prominence by the likes of Kate Moss and Sienna Miller, took fifth place in the chart.

Flares completed the top five, remaining popular despite the brash varieties worn in the 1970s.

But the trousers were one of a number of pieces of clothing to appear in both the most popular and most detested lists.

The bell-bottomed pants also finished fifth in the worst fashion chart.

Platform shoes and ponchos also appeared to provoke mixed emotions in the 3500 shop

Jennifer Lopez Fashion Show

Jennifer Lopez Fashion Show

Pop diva, actress and budding fashion designer Jennifer Lopez has made her New York runway debut with an eclectic collection that showed she may be able to bring her star power to the world of haute couture.

The show, which was nothing short of theatrical, featured models in denim shorts and pants, cashmere sweaters, flowered babydoll tops, satin, crystals and lots and lots of fur.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell strutted down the catwalk in halter-topped jumpsuit with tiered ruffles running down the legs and an enormously wide-brimmed mushroom-like white hat.

"I was very pleasantly surprised," Jane Larkworthy, an editor at W magazine, said of Lopez's new "Sweetface" line. "I love satin pants and I love fur."

The show was divided into three parts meant to correspond to phases of Lopez's life: her start in the Bronx, her music career and her current red-carpet lifestyle.

In the background, yellow neon lights spelled out "JLo Story" during the first phase, then turned into two red turntables for the second, and then into a stretch limo and a velvet rope for the third.

During the finale, music from her upcoming album, Rebirth, boomed in the background.

The hotly anticipated and celebrity-studded event capped off New York's twice-yearly Fashion Week extravaganza, which featured the work of more than 60 designers incl

Style Starters Have Designs on Sydney

Style Starters Have Designs on Sydney

New Zealand's budding fashion designers are about to find out who can use Sydney's Australian Fashion Week catwalk as their runway to international success.

The opportunity will be decided in a business assistance competition to be judged this week.

Finalists have been trimmed to eight design companies in the first New Zealand version of Australia's Mercedes-Benz Start Up competition.

The designers - with one to five years' commercial experience - present their latest collections in a runway show in Auckland on Friday in a bid to win $5000, an opportunity to show their collections during Mercedes Australian Fashion Week in Sydney in May, and ongoing mentoring from established industry players.

Graeme Lewsey, a spokesman for organiser Australian Fashion Innovators, said the programme had been running in Australia for four years and had been extended to New Zealand designers in recognition of how well they did on the international fashion stage.

Lewsey would be judging alongside Nom D designer Margi Robertson, Sunday Star-Times style editor Stacy Gregg and buyers Madeline Healy and Jo Gould from Auckland's Muse.

Dunedin designer Robertson said the exposure would be amazing for the young designers.

"Showing what you can do on the catwalk in Sydney is pretty daunting, especially from a financial point o

Fashion Magazine Sets Its Sights on Global A-list

Fashion Magazine Sets Its Sights on Global A-list

Launched online in 1997, it moved to a glossy magazine in October.

It can now be bought in London, Sydney, Melbourne and throughout New Zealand and next month will launch its first translated version in Romania.

The monthly fashion-focused magazine employs a core staff of 25 people and up to 200 part-time writers, photographers and columnists based in New York, Montreal, London, Australia and New Zealand.

Though not a money-spinner yet, it sells about 20,000 copies in New Zealand and 3000 overseas. Mr Yan and editor-in-chief Nicola Brockie are looking ahead to possible launches in northern Europe and the Middle East.

According to Mr Yan, the magazine is already gracing the coffee tables of the rich and famous, including those of actor Eddie Murphy's wife, Nicole, Australian supermodel Sarah O'Hare and film director Spike Lee. It is also about to make its debut in a Hollywood film in which it will feature on the shelves of an upmarket hair salon owned by Rene Russo's character in Two for the Money, also starring Al Pacino.

Mr Yan, who was born in Hong Kong but has lived in Wellington since the age of three, got his first taste of self-employment when he started a calligraphy business while still at Scots College. That resulted in his writing the menus for a United Nations Children's Fund dinner in honour of a
