Italicising Fashion

Italicising Fashion

According to the international marketing manager of the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), an Italian fashion and design institute, Mauro Cavagnaro, "Milan is the foremost fashion Capital of the world."

Cavagnaro claimed that the institute was the biggest and the best fashion institution of Europe. He was recently in India to look at possibilities of admitting more and more Indian students to the institute, through agents in India.

Cavagnaro remarked, the biggest fashion school in Paris, which is considered as the melting pot of fashion, was smaller than the fashion theatre of IED. He said: "All the big brands in fashion belong to Italy; Paris is only a hub of 'couture' or fashion for the rich, while in essence, Italy is the country of real fashion."

"Italy has a newfound interest in India to recruit Indian students, who are bright and can easily mix with the Italians. At present, we are targeting almost 100 students from India every year.

This, according to him was in sharp contrast with the Chinese, who did not like to mix with anyone. Italians like Indians, for they are gregarious," Cavagnaro said.

At present, IED is focusing on recruiting Indian students for its one to three-year diploma courses in design, fashion and other related areas, which are being offered in English.

Fashion Flashback Golden Oldies

Fashion Flashback: Golden Oldies

From the glamour of the '20s to the power suit of the '80s, some styles are worth revisiting.

Style, fashion and design are always changing, they say, and always evolving into something new even while harkening back to what came before.

That's particularly noticeable at the turn of each year, when style-watchers examine the trends of the previous year and look forward to what trends may appear during the next.

But lost in the shuffle are trends that one might wish would return. We asked several style-watchers about trends in fashion and design that they'd like to see come back.

Their answers -- which cover things both aesthetic and practical -- could, we think, serve as fodder for fashion-forward Southern Nevadans who might wish to have a hand in creating the next big thing.

Gigi Morris, a designer who teaches fashion design and apparel production at the Nevada Association of Fashion Design, casts her vote for a return to the looks and styles of the 1920s.

That era is "my favorite," she says. "I love the glamour of the '20s."

In fact, Morris uses the '20s to illustrate design principles in her classes. In the clothing of the time, she says, "you can really study all the details in the fashions, where you do a lot of accessorizing and a lot of trims."

"It really is a very glamorous era," she says.

Tom Ford and Domenico de Soles Secret Project

Tom Ford and Domenico de Sole's Secret Project

Tom Ford and Domenico de Sole are collaborating again - and it's on a design project "unrelated to fashion".

Although Ford was unwilling to reveal many details of the project in a recent interview with Women's Wear Daily, he did drop this titbit: "I am working on some things that have nothing to do with ready-to-wear, and I'm not ready to announce anything."

One thing Ford was rather more positive about was the fact that an Italian press report this week saying that he was to return to fashion for spring 2006, possibly in partnership with Aeffe for women and Zegna for men, "is absolutely, completely 150 percent untrue - and I'm not lying."

He went on: "I have never met with anyone from Aeffe. I have never talked with anyone from Aeffe. It is unfounded and untrue." But team Ford/de Sole is, it seems, still going strong post-Gucci: "I can't say that I miss him, because I see him all the time," says Ford, "We talk all the time, and we e-mail constantly - we've both learned how to do it."

Ford also confirmed: "If I re-enter fashion, it would only be with Domenico," adding: "I have to say I miss fashion a lot. I miss designing. I love it. I miss the rush. I didn't think I would, so it just proves how turned off and tired I was."
