The British Fashion Awards 2004

The British Fashion Awards 2004

Phoebe Philo was named Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards last night.

The 31 year old designer, who is expecting her first baby later on this year and is credited with increasing sales at Chloe by a massive 40 per cent since last season, picked up the gong from Bryan Ferry, leaving fellow nominees Roland Mouret and Christopher Bailey by the wayside.

Other winners at the event, which took place in the Raphael Gallery at the Victoria & Albert Museum, included Best Menswear Designer Alexander McQueen, Best Accessories Designer Mulberry and Best Model Lily Cole.

Giles Deacon beat two other hot choices, Alice Temperley and Jonathan Saunders, to take home the Best New Designer gong for his two-season-old label, Giles.

The Fashion Creator award was won by make-up guru Pat McGrath, who was responsible for the Leigh Bowery mask looks that John Galliano's models took on last season, while David Bailey took home the V&A's own award for Outstanding Achievement in Fashion.

The Net-a-porter team, which is no stranger to winning prizes these days, was partying again last night too, after being named Best Shop over fellow contenders Asprey and Matthew Williamson.

Senior Class Selects Winning Beer Jacket Design

Senior Class Selects Winning Beer Jacket Design

In 1915, a group of seniors donned white suits to protect their clothes from the beer they drank at the Nassau Inn. The tradition lives on for this year's senior class, whose winning design for the Class of 2005 "Beer Jacket" was announced Sunday.

Over 90 percent of the senior class voted through the Class of 2005 website. The first round of voting allowed each member to select two designs from 16 choices, which varied both in logo and style. For the second round, seniors selected their top choice out of the three most popular designs.

"The high voter turnout was really encouraging," said Anne-Louise Bigliani '05, who is responsible for this year's class jackets.

Edward Shin '05 submitted the winning design, which was actually created by his brother Ernie, a high school senior. One of the last designs submitted, it features a large orange and black tiger on the back and a Princeton crest with "Class of 2005" written on the front.

"My brother is a much better artist than I am and I knew he would make something cool," Shin said.

The only inputs Shin had in the design were the number of buttons and the design of the pockets. Nevertheless, he was very impressed with the final design.

"I think it shows that our class has good taste," he said.

Flip Flop Socks Creates Four New Design Styles

Flip Flop Socks Creates Four New Design Styles

Flip Flop Socks also known in years past as Thong Socks, Slap Socks or Tabi Socks, have been a part of the Japaneese culture for thousands of years. In 2003 Cloudyreason Inc. introduced them back into the American market as "Flip Flop Socks," offering three styles in four colors. "Many customers tell us they still have a pair of Thong Socks or Slap Socks they purchases in the 1970's, and are thrilled to find them again in the U.S.." says Michele Baer, Cloudyreason Inc. president.

The new product's popularity has prompted Cloudyreason Inc. to produce even more styles and colors to satisfy customers. With the Christmas season approaching, the company will attempt to deliver the new styles in early November 2004.

"We've had such a flood of email requests for new styles from customers over the last 2 months, we made it a goal to get our new designs out before Christmas", says Baer. Cloudyreason Inc. will produce two new styles, a crew line in 2 new colors and a light weight grey and white base sock with two different colorful horizontal stripe sets. "They will be classy and colorful, more like a light stylish dress sock for Flip Flops."

Anatomy of a Classic The Trench

Anatomy of a Classic: The Trench

It started as a purely practical weatherproof overcoat. But over the course of a century, the trench has outlasted every trend and won over every new generation.

In 1914, when Sir Ernest Shackleton launched his expedition to cross the Antarctic, "cutting-edge technology" meant reindeer-fur boots and wool underwear. But thanks to outerwear pioneer Thomas Burberry, Shackleton and his crew were kitted out with waterproof coveralls that helped fend off ice, sleet and frostbite.

Here, an interactive look at the pedigree of a fashion icon through the years 1914 - 2004.

Cartier Design Viewed by Ettore Sottsass at The Museum of Fine Arts

Cartier Design Viewed by Ettore Sottsass at The Museum of Fine Arts

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, presents Cartier design viewed by Ettore Sottsass. Cartier Design viewed by Ettore Sottsass presents for the first time a special selection of objects from The Cartier Collection, displayed in individual showcases created by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass.

Cartier, one of the world's most renowned creators of jewelry, has been making brilliantly crafted, luxurious designs since 1847. Although its main focus has been providing jewelry and accessories to their clientele, the firm has also maintained a private collection of outstanding works from the 19th and 20th centuries. Numbering 1200 objects, the collection also includes drawings and watercolors as well as other related materials. The collection is not accessible to the public, and is not in a museum environment. Many of the pieces were acquired by Cartier on the open market, and are one-of-a-kind.

In 2000, Cartier invited Ettore Sottsass, the legendary avant-garde Italian architect and designer, to curate an exhibition from the firm's private collection. Although portions of the collection had been on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum and the Hermitage previously, this was the first time that Cartier ceded complete control of the curatorial process. Sottsass chose the 200 works for the exhibition based on
