Suzie Aston maybe a fledgling designer but she has cemented her place at the forefront of fashion with her collection of contemporary street wear, Rebel with a Conscience. Standing head and shoulders above the designs of her peers, Aston’s capsule collection in the graduate show at Fashion Week stood out as one of the few graduates to focus solely on street.
Not since Insidious Fix has a designer managed to catapult wool into cool. She describes her collection as: “flirty 1920s meets risqué punk in a funky lounge bar” and says that her garments are perfect for the girl who likes to surprise with unexpected details and doesn’t scrimp on style. Having taken the best from the prohibition era and fused it with the delicious punk-influenced style of today, Aston has taken the market created by the likes of Illicit one step further, creating a range which stands out on the street, but ensures femininity: “My collection is aimed at women who like to shock you but are still responsible and hard working.”
At the forefront of her collection was the pink knitted dress. Slung low on the hips and high on the thighs it was paired with three quarter fishnet tights and a petite cuff. Created with a mix of wool, cotton and cotton blend, the outfit defines the shape of the woman wearing it, while remaining flexible enough to suit most si

Dazzling cuts, colours and styles once again took centre stage at the 5th annual L’Oreal Colour Trophy Awards last Tuesday night in Kuala Lumpur.
Nineteen finalists snipped, coloured and styled their way into the hearts of the judges and audience, comprising the crème de la crème of the Malaysian fashion and hairdressing circles, but it was Johor Baru hairdresser Eric Tan Wee Siong who emerged the night’s grand-prize winner.
The 26-year-old from Elle Studio in Johor Baru won the coveted L’Oreal Colour Trophy, a RM145,000 Ford Escape 2.0 Litre SUV and a trip to London, in addition to guaranteed publicity in magazines and salon marketing kits.
His creation – a simple asymmetrical bob of muted copper, silver and ash blue that was long in the front and sides, but short and sharply layered at the back – epitomised the event’s “Dual Beauty” theme and was a clear favourite with the audience.
“It was inspired by the clean, simple lines in architecture,̶ 1; explained the hairdresser of eight years after the event came to a close, adding, “I chose these particular colours because they signify the current winter trends.”
Tan was tops in the South Malaysia Zone category, in addition to winning the Female Choice and Shu Uemura Makeup awards.
