Fashion Trends Prove Tough to Spot

Fashion forecasters predict that New York's fashion week will bring everything from a return to conservative dressing to a taste for Latin American-styled clothes in the months ahead.

But pressed on how they know or why so many designers pick a single trend season after season, they're far less specific.

"Divine inspiration," suggested one.

"It's sort of in the air all over," said another.

In fact, forecasters look at everything from art exhibits to zodiac signs to determine what is inspiring the minds of designers and occupying the minds of consumers.

"It isn't purely about fashion. It's about life trends," said Wendy Liebmann, president of WSL Strategic Retail Consultants. She said forecasters "stick their noses in people's lives."

"We pay a lot of attention to listening to people wherever we happen to be, whether it's in malls or subways or theaters or in line at the supermarket," she said. "We listen to the way they are talking about their lives."

That's only the beginning, she cautioned. It's knowing what to do with that information that's key.

"If we know that 64 percent of people stand on their head on Thursdays, what does that mean for the fashion industry? How to translate that is our practical expertise," she said.

Forecasters say they take cues from what's new in art, politics, economics,

T-shirts Move Up the Fashion Ladder

T-shirts Move Up the Fashion Ladder

Ease is the appeal of the T-shirt, but designers and manufacturers have realized comfort doesn't necessarily mean sloppy.

The simple, shapeless T has taken a fashionable turn: It now has a body-skimming fit, is offered in a rainbow of colors and has a more luxurious hand thanks to new fabric blends and washes.

Pop star Mandy Moore created her own line and label, Mblem, so she could have an unlimited supply of "functional, casual and sexy" T's.

"It all evolved from the fact that I'm totally the jeans and T-shirt girl. If I can get away with wearing jeans and a T-shirt somewhere, I'll do it," she says. "Getting dressed up is fun but I'm really just a lazy bum and that's the extent of the wardrobe in my mind," Moore says.

The Los Angeles-based Juicy Couture is widely credited with making casual clothes cool, but why stop with the hoodie and drawstring pants? asks Claire Stansfield, co-founder and co-president of C&C California, another West Coast sportswear collection that made its mark with signature T-shirts.

Like Juicy, C&C was recently acquired by Liz Claiborne as the giant apparel company seeks to expand niche collections.

Canadian Designers Flock to New York Fashion Week

Canadian Designers Flock to New York Fashion Week

Six hot Canadian designers are set to showcase their fur fashions at the epicentre of cool: New York Fashion Week.

This Saturday's show, called Northern Exposures and sponsored by the North American Fur Association and the Toronto Fashion Incubator, will feature designs by Izzy Camilleri, Paul Hardy, David Dixon, Joeffer Caoc, Marie Saint Pierre and CINCYN.

Even though her fur collection will consist largely of outerwear, fans of the Toronto-based Camilleri will still be treated to a few sizzling, body-hugging designs.

A heavily jewelled evening dress - a mix of black mink and leather - is her most revealing piece.

The rest of the collection is fur separates mixed with leather or a weave fabric Camilleri is using for her fall collection.

Hardy has been working with a variety of furs including long-haired beaver, coyote, muskrat and mink. His collection will feature coats with a more progressive, functional approach. It will include fur-lined coats such as tweed hooded duffle jackets lined in muskrat with the hoods lined with silver fox or beaver, "just to give it that richness."

For more decadence, he'll include a full-length evening coat with a white quilted wool and silk exterior trimmed in pearl mink and fully lined in a sheared pearl mink.
