![]() Active FashionAre fashion designers frustrated politicians? Is the next leader of the federal Opposition currently studying textile design rather than political science? One might wonder, considering the fashion world's current inclination to take on "the big issues". Across the globe we've seen slogans such as "Dior Not War" in Paris, "Vote or Die" in the USA and "I'm afraid of Americans" in Australia. Fashion's jumping into bed with political parties, sexual health organisations, environmental activists, and the list goes on. Is fashion the purest way to get serious topics out into the open, or have frock makers simply found a new fad to rake in the dollars? Designer Charlie Brown recently judged a T-shirt design competition organised for International Herpes Week. The brainchild of pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which was run through fashion design schools throughout Australia, entries were based on a herpes educational kit called the Facts Pack. A spokesperson for GSK said: "The competition was designed to create awareness about the condition as well as to break down the stigma attached to the disease." Brown laughs when asked why she agreed to be associated with such an un-glamorous issue, saying she was "probably the only designer who said 'yes'." Her publicist was "not so happy" that she did. more www.the... (194) added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Chav FashionImitation is the sincerest form of annoying the fashionistas.Burberry blames chavs for its disappointing sales. The adoption by chavs of plaid as a low-life uniform is frightening away upmarket customers. Tommy Hilfiger has removed the logo from some clothes in order to discourage chavs from buying baggies as tribal uniform. Fashion houses are threatened by the popularity of their gear among the unfashionable classes. Fashion is gentility running away from vulgarity, and afraid of being overtaken. But it has been overtaken, ever since it became fashionable to advertise the name of one's tailor on one's clothes, like a footballer. The poor are too rich, and the rich have run out of ideas. And the queue for service is getting awfully long. Economists call this phenomenon a positional good. When everybody's somebody, then no one's anybody. Motoring used to be a transport of delight, when the elite motorarchy bowled along the open road instead of stop-start-stoppin g in a tailback. Ski-ing is another hierarchical good. In its pristine age, the slopes were empty for the fortunate few slippers and sliders. Now that everybody, even the XYZ list, takes a winter break, they all spend the day queueing for the ski lift. ![]() Giorgio Armani: King GiorgioIt's 30 years since Giorgio Armani launched his world-conquering fashion label. To celebrate, he tells Jamie Huckbody about life, love and the future of an empire. The Armani headquarters, Milan. It's the day after Giorgio Armani has finished presenting his spring/summer 2005 collections. I am informed that Mr Armani, as he is to be addressed, is "running a little bit late", having insisted upon going to the showroom to ensure that everything is "just so" before the arrival of the international fashion buyers. How could it not be "just so"? This is, after all, Armani, the brand that has built a reputation upon understated sophistication in a palette of grey, beige, and ... greige. But then again, this thoroughness that borders on obsession comes as no surprise. This is the man who refuses to let go, the man who, despite his 70 years, still singlehandedly runs his $2bn company. And has the pecs of a 20-year-old. In he bounds: a whirlwind of energy and apologies, wearing his uniform of midnight-blue knitted jacket, black T-shirt and black trousers. He leads me into his office: a smallish room where the pale wood-panelled walls are lined with portraits of the man himself. There's an Andy Warhol silkscreen print of a Studio 54-era Armani and an Aaron Shikler (famous for his portraits of John F and Jackie Kennedy) more news.in... (196) added by Senay TOPCUOGLU |
