See Young Zac Build a Brand

See Young Zac Build a Brand

Zac Posen starts his day like many other 23 year olds: He's running late and clutching a large Starbucks iced coffee. His pants are slightly rumpled and the polo shirt-funky blazer combination he's wearing is an unconventional interpretation of business casual.

But the difference between Posen and the throngs of other young up-and-comers in the fashion world is he doesn't have to answer to anybody when he makes it in to work. He's the boss.

It's because of his early success as a designer, including a Council of Fashion Designers of America award for emerging talent and a joint venture in handbags and accessories with Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, that Zac Posen's studio in downtown Manhattan is all abuzz on this particular morning in preparation for New York Fashion Week.

The spring 2005 collection will be a further expansion of Posen's line, which has grown from celebrity eveningwear to suits and now sportswear. It's sportswear for a certain kind of customer, though, since not everyone wears an embellished knit polo dress to their grocery store.

"The Zac Posen woman is an intelligent woman who loves rare and exceptional things; she's adventurous and extremely sexy. Personal style is part of her way of thinking, of shopping and buying," Posen says.

His muse is his sister and creative partner, Alexandra. "I'm trying to create clothing to

Designers Discover Animal Attraction

Designers Discover Animal Attraction

Animal prints are no longer the mark of fashion's wild side. Leopard dots, and even Dalmatian spots and zebra stripes, are solidly part of the mainstream. But this season's take on the formerly rebellious look is to -- gasp -- put the print into preppy silhouettes.

"Until now, I hadn't found the pieces in animal print that I would wear because it was not in the silhouettes I'd wear," says Jenna Lyons, vice president of women's design at J. Crew. "Animal prints had always been a wrap top or on little camisoles, which are not really my style."

It's a different story, though, if the brown and tan leopard dots are on a merino-wool cardigan -- as J.Crew is offering for fall. "It's matte, not shiny, and that's important," says Lyons.

At Banana Republic, animal prints are offered in bright colors, such as purple or teal, and in muted gray, which executive vice president of design Deborah Lloyd says softens the effect so a garment doesn't scream "jungle print" or "fashion victim."

By making a graphic statement on delicate blouses or on an accessory, the print provides an unexpected pop while complementing other seasonal trends, such as tweed fabrics and ladylike skirt suits, Lloyd explains.

What else does one wear with an animal print? Attitude -- and that's what really sets the tone of the look.
