There is some uncertainty as to what constitutes fashion.
By definition fashion morphs every day. People change clothes, and clothes change people.
Fashion reflects who we are, who we want to be.
Influencing individuals and the world as a whole - a fashion statement can be just that, a form of language that acknowledges something larger within a culture.
Everything goes in to the mix: culture, music, lifestyle, politics, beliefs, and even the weather.
For example, which way the wind is blowing in Amsterdam, might determine the length of a women's hair, the style her skirt, or the height of her heels.
Today, companies producing lifestyle products have the highest potential for successful strategies, particularly in the more affluent and value-driven geographic locations.
The lines between these two continues to be blurred.
Global trends now emerge faster than ever before because of internet and text messaging.
Shortcuts in transmission of ideas and concepts between individuals are bringing the next big thing to you in the space of seconds.
For example, the latest iPod, an advanced cell phone set and a laptop are today as powerful symbols of fashion as clothing, footwear, accessories and cosmetics.
Successful brands must start to balance the "be fashionable" aspiration with today's converging technology if they want to stay competitive in the industry and most important, relevant in the mind of consumers.

Audi Joburg Fashion Week - the country's first annual autumn/winter fashion week proved a huge success when it debuted previous year.
The second edition of this world-class fashion week takes place in Soweto and Sandton over 4 days from March 5 to 8, 2008.
Soweto proves once again that it is one of South Africa's creative powerhouses as the thriving metropolis plays host to the first day of the fashion week collections on Wednesday March 5.
The showcasing of the much-anticipated autumn/winter collection will be hosted at Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in Soweto before moving to The Pavilion Room at the Sandton Convention Centre from March 6 to 8.
The event will feature the ranges of some of the country's top designers including Sun Goddess, Stoned Cherrie, KlukCGdT, Gavin Rajah, Hip Hop and Sonwabile Ndamase.
Audi Joburg Fashion Week, launched and produced in 2007 in a pioneering move by African Fashion International, closed a long-standing gap in the South African fashion calendar, giving the country's top established designers the opportunity to showcase autumn/winter collections and trends at a major fashion week run to international standards.
African Fashion International also recently welcomed the introduction of newly appointed creative director, Deon Redman.

The Body: Connections with Fashion, the 10th annual conference for the International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes (IFFTI), is hosted by RMIT University: School of Architecture & Design and School of Fashion & Textiles.
The two day conference, 8 March - 9 March 2008, will capture research in various disciplines of fashion and related practices that explore notions of the body in fashion.
The theme enables a diversity of research foci related to the body and its connection to fashion; from the utilitarian function of clothing to the discipline of semiotics; from the business of fashion to manufacturing, materials technology, design innovation, history and education.
The Conference will be structured as a platform for a series of diverse but related themes that reflect current research directions and strengths of IFFTI members and the broader research community within the context of the Conference themes.
