Label Divas and Designers Designer Christian Siriano and LG Mobile Phones Combine Talents

Divas and Designers: Designer Christian Siriano and LG Mobile Phones Combine Talents

LG today announced that it has once again entered into a creative marketing partnership with rising fashion star Christian Siriano.

The partnership - titled "Divas and Designers" - includes two components and kicks off during New York Fashion Week.

As part of the marketing collaboration, Siriano has designed a special garment inspired by the fashion- forward LG Lotus phone.

Both the garment and phone will appear on the runway during his Fall 2009 Show on February 19th at Bryant Park.

The LG-Siriano partnership also includes a nationwide program that allows budding designers and stylists to create and submit their own "mood boards" online.

Siriano will select one board, and the winner will spend a day with him in his New York City design studio - all expenses paid.

While in New York, the winner will work with Siriano to co-create an accessory - influenced by the winning mood board - that will be presented to the winner at the designer's show in September 2009.

According to Siriano, "Divas and designers want fashionable phones worthy of their creativity.

Mobile phones are fashion accessories, and the LG Lotus is sleek, chic, and fabulous!"

Dorothea Pruhl Necklaces

Dorothea Pruhl: Necklaces

Dorothea Pruhl is a leading exponent of the current art jewellery scene.

Her aesthetic stance is informed by abstract impressions from nature, concentration on essentials, eminent sensitivity and sculptural power.

She makes basic statements in gold and silver - but also in wood, aluminium, titanium and stainless steel - impressions manifest in generously proportioned, clear entities.

Starting with what is there, she tracks it down to its inmost core, applying to its quintessence a new aesthetic idiom - it might be a flower, the wind, a house, birds in flight.

Born in Breslau in 1937, Dorothea Pruhl studied art at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle before working in industry as a designer of manufactured jewellery.

In 1966 she returned to Burg Giebichenstein as an instructor in jewellery-making.

From 1991 head of the jewellery class at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, Dorothea Pruhl held a chair there from 1994, until she retired in 2002.

Hence she has exerted a formative influence on the German jewellery scene both through her work and her teaching.

"Dorothea Pruhl's works are great in every sense of the word," commented Florian Hufnagl, Die Neue Sammlung.

"With her jewellery she has set standards, importantly and memorably so.

Her necklaces are empowering - for wearers and viewers alike."

In close collaboration with the artist, Die Neue Sammlung - The International Design Museum Munich - is showing a selection of Dorothea Pruehl's necklaces in the light-filled rotunda of the Pinakothek der Moderne.

In the Bag

In the Bag

The Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) presents its newest exhibition, "In the Bag."

The exhibition will run through May 2, 2009, and will explore the origin, evolution and design of the handbag.

Curated by Atlantans Clint Zeagler and Kevin Knaus, the exhibition takes the visitor from "design to delivery" of the handbag, showcasing top bags from the Friends and Sex and the City sets and from both local and leading designers, including Hermes and Oscar de la Renta among others.

"Atlantans will have the chance to see a unique and captivating showcase of handbags," says Zeagler, owner and creative director of Pecan Pie Couture, an Atlanta womenswear line.

"It's a one-of-a-kind opportunity to really delve into the design and appeal of the handbag."

The exhibition will begin by emphasizing the development and construction of different handbags and will move into the works of leading designers, displaying their collections within categories that highlight the handbag's emotional significance, iconic status and societal role.

The exhibit concludes with handbags designed by students in the Master of Accessories Design programs from the Domus Academy in Milan, Italy, and the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia.

Muriel King Artist of Fashion

Muriel King: Artist of Fashion

Sought out in the 1930s and 40s by the glamorous women of Hollywood and high society, but largely overlooked today, the unique American designer Muriel King (1900-1977) will be rediscovered in Muriel King: Artist of Fashion, on view at The Museum at FIT from March 10 through April 4, 2009.

This is the first exhibition dedicated exclusively to King, whose career spanned four decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s.

The exhibition and accompanying brochure, organized and curated by FIT graduate students in the Fashion and Textile Studies: History, Theory, Museum Practice program, will provide new scholarship, introduce Muriel King to the general public, highlight her artistic legacy, and identify her place within fashion history.

Interestingly, Muriel King had no formal training. She did not cut, drape, or sew.

Rather, she created watercolor fashion sketches detailing the construction and look of her designs, which her tailors and sewing staff then worked into garments.

Muriel King: Artist of Fashion will showcase King's superb sketches, many of which now belong to the Special Collections of the Gladys Marcus Library at FIT.

Also included will be her fashion designs for prominent clients, department stores, and Hollywood films.

Collectively, these will display the variety of recurring design elements in King's work, including lace, cascading ruffles, and armor-inspired embellishments.
