Designers Models Socialites and Two Little Dogs Too

Designers, Models, Socialites and Two Little Dogs, Too

say that Fashion Week is by its nature surreal may be, one admits, a big "no duh." But periodically it bears repeating. While there are undoubtedly some unusual things going on at the average Renaissance Weekend or World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, it seems safe to assume that little occurs at those Big Thoughts gatherings that is half as nutty as a typical day in this city when the style flock alights.

A day during Fashion Week might begin with, say, the Tamsen show, held on a 150-foot yacht berthed by a pier in the Hudson River on which models disported themselves in print jersey dresses designed by a multimillionaire who drew her inspiration from another multimillionaire, this one a beauty who married into the Getty family, became a heroin addict, died and bequeathed her doomy bohemian style to fashion posterity.

And it might continue at the opening of a Pucci store on Fifth Avenue, a mirrored jewel box dedicated to selling designs inspired by the whimsical archive of a Florentine aristocrat who flew fighter planes for the wrong side in World War II; more or less invented print logo dressing; and designed clothes for Barbie and Jackie Onassis, as well as the plastic bubble helmets once worn by stewardesses (they were called that then) on Braniff Airlines and a flag that the Apollo 15 astronauts took to the

Cole Hilfiger Back for NY Fashion Week

Cole, Hilfiger Back for N.Y. Fashion Week

Kenneth Cole, Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs and Donna Karan were among the designers set to preview their spring 2005 collections at New York Fashion Week.

Cole was in his traditional leadoff spot with Alan Cumming, Ludacris, novelist Brian Keith Jackson and Olympic track and field stars Derrick Peterson and Anthony Famiglietti expected to be in the front row at Wednesday morning's runway show.

Most of the some 80 shows during the eight-day event were scheduled at the tents in Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan. The lineup included design team Imitation of Christ on Wednesday and Tommy Hilfiger, back with his better sportswear H Hilfiger collection after sitting out last season, on Thursday.

Other designers set to preview their collections for retailers, editors, celebrities and other fashion fans during the week: Monique Lhuillier, Baby Phat, Betsey Johnson and Michael Kors.

Missing from the schedule: eveningwear designers Mark Badgley and James Mischka and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, who won the Council of Fashion Designers of America award for best menswear designer earlier this year.

Combs was to host a champagne toast at his new flagship Sean John store on Fifth Avenue, a quick stroll from Bryant Park, on Thursday night.

Esteban Cortazar Young Veteran Fashion Designer

Esteban Cortazar: Young, Veteran Fashion Designer

At 20, designer Esteban Cortazar is already an old hand of the fashion industry. The Colombia native, who grew up in Miami, is presenting his fifth major show during New York City's Fashion Week festivities. NPR's Neda Ulaby has a profile of Cortazar as part of a Morning Edition fashion series.

Cortazar, whose father was an artist and his mother a jazz singer, emigrated from Colombia a decade ago and landed in the middle of South Beach's hot fashion scene.

"Coming to Miami was a culture shock because I was able to see drag queens, I saw designers, I saw fashionistas, I saw so many things," he says. "I was just a little boy, but that's all I could see!"

To Cortazar, the fashion world was a playground filled with fascinating adults. And it seemed perfectly normal to stage a runway show at his elementary school -- a nine-piece collection, with a Little Red Riding Hood theme, modeled by fellow students.

Rod Stafford Hagwood, fashion critic for the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, says the world of fashion probably isn't the best place for most adolescents, but Cortazar was totally focused on his work. Cortazar strengthened those technical skills by attending a magnet high school in Miami that specialized in design and architecture.

Todd Oldham, who had a store in Miami Beach, is one of many world-famous designers Cortazar

Heubach India Bridging the Gap Between Ecology and Economics

Heubach India: Bridging the Gap Between Ecology and Economics

Did you know that ecology and economics can go hand in hand through sustained efforts to incorporate environmental thinking into mainstream processes? Heubach India is doing just that, and making a profit.

Pigments, like the colors they reflect, are everywhere: ink in magazines, the plastic covers of mobile phones, anti-corrosive paints on cars, etc. The factories producing such pigments are typically large consumers of chemically based raw materials and hence create vast amounts of highly toxic discharges.

Heubach India has set its goal to come as close to zero emissions as possible without compromising its leading position as a producer of high-quality pigments for the global market. Backed up by the results to prove it, their philosophy is one that assertively states that ecology and economics can go hand in hand, even for an upstream/primary producer. As a direct result of their effort to incorporate environmental thinking into their mainstream processes, Heubach has become one of the world’s top pigment suppliers, both in terms of quality and quantity.

Investment costs for pollution controls are usually seen as heavy burdens in a competitive market, enticing industries to move to countries where compliance is less restrictive and expensive.
