![]() Fashion Tips for the Magic NightAccording to the Chinese Calendar, 2005 is a year of the Rooster. This means that in order to please the Rooster and make your wishes come true in the succeeding year, you better don something bright and colorful. The most popular fabrics for the holiday dress, also the favorites of this season, are satin and velvet, from claret-colored to deep-purple. The top spots among accessories are swept by everything golden or aureate. And don't fear being extravagant!Well, Cynthia Nellis, a journalist and a former fashion buyer, listed five most common holiday fashion mistakes that you should take into consideration and add to your arsenal of fashion tips. First of all, don't wear too much shine. If you decide to embellish yourself with glitzy elements, make sure it attracts attention to the right areas of your body and goes with the whole outfit. Second rule - don't show too much skin. Pick a dress with a suggestion and leave something for imagination. Always be prepared for last-minute invitations and keep a few dressy items in your closet. Having nothing to wear is the third fatal mistake. Don't make your outfit too complicated and overwhelming. Sometimes a simple black dress with a little nice accessory can make you look utterly elegant and chic. And the last, but not the least, slip is being over or under d more 216.93.... ![]() Design for Living: A Fashion Foursome's Silver CageBack then, there were buttons, chicken bones and worse on the floor. Fluorescent lights hung like train cars at shoulder height from the ceiling, and boards and bars were on all the windows. As the two young men, Gabi and Kai, and the two young women, Ange and Adi - otherwise known as the fashion collective As Four - hacked their way through the debris in the long-abandoned fourth-floor loft on Forsyth Street on the Lower East Side they would use as their workroom and then also as their home, its sweatshop history clung to it like rank breath. When the magazines called, they would clean up in the one-bedroom they shared in a tenement on Stanton Street a few blocks away and race uptown for appointments. It was just before the millennium, and the group's indie star was rising. At the invitation of Kim Hastreiter, the co-editor of Paper Magazine, the indie fashion bible, the four had staged a show in Bryant Park using hula dolls, hundreds of them, all dressed in tiny As Four clothes and spinning to Wagner. The edgier fashion press was beside itself. In three months - and one-and-a-half Dumpsters - the loft was empty. They painted it silver from floor to ceiling. (A problem, they say, since it invited comparisons to Andy Warhol's Factory, an unlooked-for reference.) Bjork, the elfin Icelandic pop star, wore their futuristic more www.nyt... ![]() 2005 Trends: IDivisualismOver the last few years one important movement permeating industry has been 'customization', or at least a rise in the reporting of customization.Customization is most apparent in the apparel sector: in the up-market range Gucci offers personalization of their handbags and Giorgio Armani is offering his 'Atelier' service where you can get your very own garment for mere $40,000. It's in street wear too: Sneakers now come with added graffiti; J Crew and Marks & Spenser both sell kits that allow you to customize your jeans. But what greater trend does Customization reflect? Is it a reflection of the general longing for individualism; to escape 'Mass Class' society where access to previously unaffordable items has risen? Is it a reflection of individuals' desire to avoid the immediate translation of catwalk styles into the high street clothes (a lá Zara)? Or is it a reflection to stand apart from a planet instantly in tune with the latest trends though the digital world: For example, if you upgraded your jeans from Levis to Rogan and your sneakers from Nike to Bathing Ape to set your style apart, it won't be long before they're spotted on Page 6 (or even Page 3) in today's instant-info world before the rest of us are wearing Rogans and Bathing Apes (or very good rip-offs of them) down Broad Street. ![]() Designer Cos Dress up Cellphones in JapanFor the average Japanese teenager, a cell phone is a must-have item, used for e-mail, taking photos and keeping track of dates, in addition to the simple phone call. But a quick stroll around the hip Shibuya district of Tokyo shows that cell phones in Japan have also become an important identity statement, with accessories like straps, antenna rings, photo stickers and fake gems reflecting the owner's personality. That has made fashion accessories for mobile phones a big business in Japan, where even adults dangle at least a strap from their phones. Senior high-school student Tomomi has a simple explanation for why these accessories have caught on. "It's a way to make your phone different from everyone else's," she says. "The item that I want most right now is a Chanel phone strap," the 18-year-old, who asked that her last name not be used, added as she showed off the rhinestone stickers, Mickey Mouse antenna ring and tiny photos of friends that adorn her phone. Seeing a widow of opportunity, designer houses such as Hermes International, Gucci and Louis Vuitton have added mobile phone straps to their collections with prices as high as $300. A Chanel strap costs about $250, according to one online shopping site. "Unlike many other gadgets and the personal computer, the 'keitai' (mobile phone) is much more clo more economi...
