on view through January 2, 2005

Plain weave is the simplest method of interlacing yarns in a textile and is a technique found in every weaving tradition across the world. Over One, Under One, and Much More... explores the diversity of patterning that can be achieved in plain-woven textiles.

Plain-woven textiles on display include shawls from Guatemala, Bolivia, and Mexico, Indonesian sarongs, objects from Japan, Turkey, West Africa, and more - all drawn from The Textile Museum's collections.

By Hand in the Electronic Age Contemporary Tapestry

By Hand in the Electronic Age: Contemporary Tapestry

on view through September 5, 2004

This exhibition includes the work of 14 contemporary artists using tapestry technique, one of the oldest, most versatile textile techniques used to produce designs and pictures in cloth.

Featuring a single work by each of 12 Hungarian artists, By Hand in the Electronic Age also takes an in-depth look at two North American artists, Jon Eric Riis and Marcel Marois, to demonstrate how a tapestry artist, like a painter, develops his or her own style and themes.

Through works ranging from pictorial to abstract, the exhibition shows that this labor-intensive technique is not an abandoned anachronism but continues to be a vibrant medium of artistic expression. Curated by Rebecca A.T. Stevens, Consulting Curator, Contemporary Textiles, The Textile Museum.

DX Fashion Design Camp

DX Fashion Design Camp

Toronto's DX knows the way to convince people of the importance of design is to get them young.

Serrocina, Flairsett, DX Divas and Fashion Fusion -- the spiciest new labels around are being developed by talent so young they have to be picked up by their parents.

Housed in the upper echelons of Toronto's Design Exchange, these mini design teams are surrounded by frantic sketches and swaths of fabric, all the while trying to cram in enough studio time before camp ends for the day.

The oldest of these 20 fashion addicts vying for runway dominance clocks in at 13 years of age -- the youngest was 7 -- all of them part of a summer fashion design program for kids who can't get enough haute couture at recess.

"I think it's important for kids to come to the Design Exchange and understand design," says Samantha Sannella, president and CEO. To that end, the DX has also offered week-long sessions this summer that focused on architecture and graphic design.

With only five days to get runway-ready, the fashion camp had to cut to the chase. The goal was to create the ultimate outfit -- with each of the four labels (backed by a team of five) coming up with a distinct theme for their look. The burgeoning style gurus played a front-and-centre roll in designing the garments and accessories, with one girl from each team playing mode

Fashion and Sport are Being Hopelessly Entangled in Athens

Fashion and Sport are Being Hopelessly Entangled in Athens

Even those of you who don't care about gold medals and world records can't have failed to notice that the Olympic games are around the corner. Oh yawn, not more boring old athletes in shiny tracksuits ... well, not any more. Sport is as much about fashion as it is about sport. In recent months, Vogue in the US and GQ in Britain have both run shoots of Olympic athletes, while medal hopeful Paula Radcliffe was photographed in Alberta Ferretti for this month's issue of Vogue in Britain. These days, you're just as likely to see David Beckham's name in the style

section as on the back page, or Freddie Ljungberg in his Calvin Klein pants as running around a pitch. Maria Sharapova may have won Wimbledon, but she also picked up a modeling contract along the way.

But when did sports stars become so fashionable? Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle -- great names, even better mullets. But style icons? Not likely. Seb Coe, Martina Navratilova, and Tessa Sanderson -- fantastic athletes but not really troubling Kate Moss in the style stakes. This sport/fashion love affair has all kicked off in the past 10 years.

It started after designers cottoned on to the fact that sports stars have lots of fans who will pay to look like them. More to the point, it's a relationship that makes sense. All those athletic bodies honed to perfection, all th

Fresh Fashion with Passion

Fresh Fashion with Passion

Dundee College students have enjoyed rave reviews after putting on two very special events.

This year's showpiece fashion night featured 122 garments designed by 25 students, while works by more than 300 students were exhibited at the college's art show.

Many of those taking part will now take their talents elsewhere as they progress with their education, and perhaps in the years ahead some of them will be showing off their skills again in major shows and exhibitions across the world.

At the fashion show, 25 models took to the catwalk and some appeared before the full house wearing their own designs.

Jim Buchan, team leader on the fashion courses, said: "It has always been part of our vision to encourage links with the fashion and textile trade, both both design and manufacture."

He added: "The fashion show was just one element of the end-of-year exhibition, which shows off the breadth and depth of talent and skills in art and design at Dundee College.

"For many students, this was not only the end of the year, but the end of their time at Dundee, as they move on to art schools around the country.

"We are confident all will do well."

He reckoned some could emulate the success of former Dundee College art and design students who have gone on to win top awards both in higher education and in industry.
