Top Fashion Designer Shares Her Prize with Up and Comer

Fashion designer Adrian Hailwood will benefit from Karen Walker's largess and accompany her to London Fashion Week in February.

When Walker won the Air New Zealand-sponsored Fashion Week Export Growth Award in October, she vowed to use half the prize to take a designer with her to London when she stages her off-schedule show in February.

It was announced yesterday that she would take the 32-year-old Aucklander, sharing a prize poolof more than $30,000.

Hailwood, an up-and-comer with some stockists in London, Japan, Singapore and Los Angeles, was the stand-out to shadow Walker and make the most of her fashion industry contacts.

"Adrian's clearly hungry to grow his business and to export, and his latest collection is thoughtful and has a fresh look which is important in terms of potential export success. Also I think having a label that shares some common values and moods with mine is a benefit too as there's an easier fit with the people I'll be able to introduce him to," said Walker.

Hailwood is "absolutely thrilled" to have the chance to see how Walker deals with producing an international show and hopes to increase his sales in Asia and Europe as a result.

"I'm really chuffed," he said. "I totally rate Karen and the gesture of her not only taking me but trusting me and seeing my potential is really spe

No Mens Fashion from Helmut Lang

No Men's Fashion from Helmut Lang

For the first time in five seasons Helmut Lang decided not to stage a runway show in men's fashion season that will take place in Paris next month.

"To show men's and women's has always been our identity. I thought it was a good time to go back to the original format and not show men's in Jan particularly as the men's and women's shows (in Paris) are four week apart, " Lang explained to FWD.

Some may view such move as an economy measure from the Italian Prada Group, who obtained the remaining 49 percent stake in Helmut Lang and full control of the New York-based design company.

However, a Prada spokesperson denied such rumors and insisted that it was simply a "creative decision made by the designer himself" and that it "was in no way determined by financial or ecomomic factors".

Lang has included men's looks in his womenwear collections previously, and skipping the French men's season is understood as an attempt to avoid crossing the Atlantic twice in winter with large numbers of his staff.

According to FWD, the House is still working on the question of presenting the men's clothing to the fashion critics, considering making available visuals through CD ROMs or DVDs.

Pucci Designs Make a Major Comeback

Pucci Designs Make a Major Comeback

She must have more Pucci than anyone else in the world, the only daughter and surviving child of the famed designer himself, Emilio Pucci, Marquis of Barsento.

But when Laudomia Pucci di Barsento arrived at Saks Fifth Avenue at Bal Harbour Shops last week to promote the spring/resort 2005 collection, she wore a Gap T-shirt, black pants and a puzzling Pucci herringbone blazer with somberly dyed diagonal stripes from last season.

The 43-year-old mother of three had plucked a silk Pucci scarf from a store display and draped it around her neck, but the tag wouldn't stay hidden.

She wore little makeup and even less attitude. Clearly, Pucci wasn't quite the picture of image director of the fashion house that produces some of the most riotous, glamorous, distinctive designs in the world.

"There is a style of Pucci that is evergreen in a way," Pucci said, without a whiff of/the stuffiness one might expect from a woman who grew up in a 600-year-old ancestral palazzo in Florence, Italy, with rugs by her father and paintings by Botticelli and Raphael.

"We have such a fantastic identity."

Specialty shops and top-notch department stores are once again hot for Pucci, whose kaleidoscope, color-soaked motifs are instantly recognizable.
