MSU Senior Tops in Floral Design

MSU Senior Tops in Floral Design

Some people spend years struggling to succeed in the big city, but for two Mississippi State students last week, all it took was a few bouquets.

Vicksburg native Suzanne Williams and Callaway High graduate Aisha Booker topped more than 50 students from 13 schools from around the country to finish first and second, respectively, in the American Institute of Floral Designers' Student Floral Design Competition in New York on July 7.

Competitors were judged in four competitions: Flowers to Wear, Hospital Design, Bridal and Sympathy Tribute, with the overall award going to the best composite score. Williams won first place in the Flowers to Wear category and took third in Bridal. Booker placed second in the Hospital Design category in addition to her overall second place finish.
Both girls are entering this fall as fifth-year seniors in MSU's unique retail floristry management program, a four-year degree program with about 20 students under the school's horticulture major. The RFM emphasis, begun in the early 1970s, requires business, art and design classes as well as horticulture to prep students for running a florist shop.

But MSU students also get hands-on retail and public-relations training. It's the student-run florist in the center of campus that sets the program in Starkville apart from other retail floristry manag

High End Fashion Design a Click Away on eBay

High End Fashion Design a Click Away on eBay

Only days after the fall 2004 runway shows in New York, garments from Proenza Schouler went up for sale on eBay. Barely a year old, the design house has nowhere near the brand recognition of Ralph Lauren or Donna Karan. But to astute readers of glossy magazines and red-carpet watchers, Proenza Schouler was the new designer drug.

Characterized by its gunmetal sequins, structured bodices and lean tailoring, the company's merchandise is not the sort one expects to find amid eBay's old compact discs, garage-sale collectibles and oddball tchotchkes.

But eBay, the Internet auction site with $2.17 billion in net revenue, is evolving. It had helped to sponsor designer Narciso Rodriguez's runway show and auctioned pieces from his modernist collection as well as autographed bottles of his new fragrance. Cozying up to the fashion industry and lasering in on its rarefied customers has become part of eBay's bigger plan.

"With 105 million users, we can find a customer for every product," says eBay's style director, Constance White, who signed on last summer expressly to raise the company's fashion credibility.

One of White's first contributions to eBay is "Personal Style," an online trend report with links to the appropriate live auctions. The newsletter's mission is to give sellers a better idea of what to hawk and shoppers

The Turkish Cotton Industry

The Turkish Cotton Industry

The increasing level of globalization in cotton has led to a greater need for
understanding production and marketing systems of coutries other than our
own. Turkey is one important country in terms of the magnitude of total
cotton production. This paper addresses the system in Turkey, with some
discussion of current and future performance of Turkey in the global cotton
market. There are significant differences between the US and Turkey,
especially as they relate to the role of the cooperative in price setting and
distribution. External factors such as the GAP irrigation project in Turkey
may mean an increasing role for Turkey in the global cotton economy.
