Fashion and Sport are Being Hopelessly Entangled in Athens

Fashion and Sport are Being Hopelessly Entangled in Athens

Even those of you who don't care about gold medals and world records can't have failed to notice that the Olympic games are around the corner. Oh yawn, not more boring old athletes in shiny tracksuits ... well, not any more. Sport is as much about fashion as it is about sport. In recent months, Vogue in the US and GQ in Britain have both run shoots of Olympic athletes, while medal hopeful Paula Radcliffe was photographed in Alberta Ferretti for this month's issue of Vogue in Britain. These days, you're just as likely to see David Beckham's name in the style

section as on the back page, or Freddie Ljungberg in his Calvin Klein pants as running around a pitch. Maria Sharapova may have won Wimbledon, but she also picked up a modeling contract along the way.

But when did sports stars become so fashionable? Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle -- great names, even better mullets. But style icons? Not likely. Seb Coe, Martina Navratilova, and Tessa Sanderson -- fantastic athletes but not really troubling Kate Moss in the style stakes. This sport/fashion love affair has all kicked off in the past 10 years.

It started after designers cottoned on to the fact that sports stars have lots of fans who will pay to look like them. More to the point, it's a relationship that makes sense. All those athletic bodies honed to perfection, all th

Fresh Fashion with Passion

Fresh Fashion with Passion

Dundee College students have enjoyed rave reviews after putting on two very special events.

This year's showpiece fashion night featured 122 garments designed by 25 students, while works by more than 300 students were exhibited at the college's art show.

Many of those taking part will now take their talents elsewhere as they progress with their education, and perhaps in the years ahead some of them will be showing off their skills again in major shows and exhibitions across the world.

At the fashion show, 25 models took to the catwalk and some appeared before the full house wearing their own designs.

Jim Buchan, team leader on the fashion courses, said: "It has always been part of our vision to encourage links with the fashion and textile trade, both both design and manufacture."

He added: "The fashion show was just one element of the end-of-year exhibition, which shows off the breadth and depth of talent and skills in art and design at Dundee College.

"For many students, this was not only the end of the year, but the end of their time at Dundee, as they move on to art schools around the country.

"We are confident all will do well."

He reckoned some could emulate the success of former Dundee College art and design students who have gone on to win top awards both in higher education and in industry.

Nike is Swift to Adapt Fast Fabrics

Nike is Swift to Adapt Fast Fabrics

Performance enhancing drugs might be a strict Olympic no! But there are no limits on performance enhancing fabrics.

Nike is busting out the Swift suit, a hooded unitard which promises to maximize an athlete's potential by regulating heat and reducing drag.

"The Swift suit is engineered in the truest sense of the word," says Alastair McColl. Nike Canada's general merchandise manager for apparel was showing off the high-tech togs at a press event last week at Nike Toronto on Bloor St. W.

The Swift Suit was introduced at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney by Australian runner Cathy Freeman, who glided to a gold in the 400-metre event.

Nike researchers have spent thousands of hours since perfecting the garment which is adapted for rowing, cycling and track and field.

Most notably, wind tunnel tests revealed that, "different parts of the body accelerate at different rates," McColl says. "That was a surprise. It had always been assumed that all parts of the body accelerate at the same speed."

With that in mind, the unitard is zoned with six different fabrics strategically placed to allow minimum resistance and maximum efficiency.
Seaming is located in the back of the suit for aerodynamics, although rowers, who sit backwards, have suits seamed in the front. Nike researchers estimate the Swift suit could allow
