![]() Church Fears Rosary Fashion CrazeA fashion craze for rosary beads has been criticised by the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales. After pop star Britney Spears and England footballer David Beckham were both recently photographed wearing them, sales are booming across the UK. So much so that the Catholic Church fears they are being trivialised and has issued a special leaflet that gives guidance on their use as prayer aids. Yet one jeweller said they were now more and more seen as fashion items. Father Allen Morris, secretary of the Catholic Church's department for Christian life and worship, said that while rosary beads "look very nice...it is a great pity if they are only being used as a decoration and not for devotional purposes". He added that while such celebrities wearing rosary beads were "not doing wicked things and leading us astray, I am sorry that people are wearing them as fashion accessories and are not mindful of their religious significance". The beads are traditionally used by Roman Catholics to count off prayers. At jewellery store Aida in Ealing, London, owner Aida Norman said there had definitely been a surge in rosary bead sales over the last year. more news.bb... (385) added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Brave New Worlds at Mercedes Fashion WeekKIWI label World took a walk on the wild side with bright block colours on the body and fabulously garish make-up at yesterday's third and final day of Mercedes Fashion Week. But the true fashion highlight came from the New Generation 1 parade, which featured the hottest new designers on the block. For such young minds, the catwalk spoke volumes on the exciting times ahead for such labels as Base, Spook, Moocha Bella and Stephanie by Conley & Cranford. Base menswear was a homage to amazing cable knits, one in particular wrapped with leather strapping, which wouldn't be out of place tending goats on a rocky Mediterranean outcrop. Spook continued the knitwear trend for the ladies with long-sleeve sheer knits while a blue and red tweed trench-coat with cherry silk lining was a gorgeous take on a wardrobe staple. Moocha Bella's little red T-shirt dress could become a favourite among the nightclub set for its slinky vibe with Converse All Star trainers studded with sparkling diamantes worn on the feet. Golden Square knitting queen Lorinda Grant struck a pose of a different kind with yoga dancers introducing the home-spun collection of wool wraps and hooded shoulder warmers. Estate.red label's little jacket with covered buttons in fabulous tartans should be on every girl's winter 2005 wish list. more www.her... (152) added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Australian Fashion Week Autumn Winter 2005Melbourne's queen of tight pants and short skirts kicked off the Australian Fashion Week autumn/winter 2005 show with a new look yesterday.Bettina Liano squeezed a few hundred buyers and media into her city shop for breakfast and a knockout show of shapely satin-and-denim corset tops and lace-trimmed flip and ra-ra skirts ruched and gathered to protrude stiffly from the hips. Liano's overtly sexual signature was tempered by romanticism and a bohemian femininity. Velvet, satin and sheer chiffon were unusual elements in a Liano collection. One blouse in white chiffon said it all with its softly ballooned sleeves and frilled cuffs draped over the model's fingers. "Bettina's gone girly," commented one unimpressed buyer. "I liked the sex stuff better." She was one of few. "It's quite romantic and olde-worlde - they're things I'd design for myself, things to flatter," Liano said after the show, surrounded by her mother, daughters, father, step-mother and cousin. more www.the... Leggy models made their way down the catwalk this afternoon in Finetti's designs, which included pencil skirts, jackets, dresses and three-quarter length trousers. Some of the outfits on show featured fur capes. "They are possums (fur) from New Zealand," Finetti said. "So really it's not like you are killing a tiger." Finetti described his designs, many of which featured beading and sequins, as "sexy". Colours included smoky blues and greys as well as silver, brown and black. When asked what inspired the collection, Finetti said "the '40s, '50s and '80s, like Grace Jones and Marlene Dietrich". A pirate-inspired collection, with puff sleeves and ruffles, from Melbourne designer Bettina Liano kicked off the day. Ruby reds, deep purples, velvet and taffeta figured prominently in the show at Liano's city store. more www.smh... (281) added by Levent OZLER |
