Label New Zealand Runway

New Zealand Runway

The Auckland Viaduct won’t have a chance to relax after Air New Zealand Fashion Week, as the public will get its chance to celebrate the world of fashion food and design. A day after the final model exits the catwalk, the same Viaduct venue will be reignited in a celebration of all that is fashionable, inspiring and innovative.

New Zealand Runway, which runs from 22-25 October, will bring together the best creative talent New Zealand has to offer. The brainchild of event producers Charleen Oliver and Josh Gilbertson, the concept came to the pair about a year ago when they realised that while Fashion Week had been a great success, there wasn’t a public event of the same magnitude.

“Both Josh and I have had past experiences in events before and it just seemed to us that there was no premium consumer event that offers the opportunity for the public to be part of something special and upmarket,” says Ms Oliver. “There is so much talent and creativity bursting out of this country. We wanted to create a place where it can be showcased.”

The duo believe that Runway is a chance for the everyday style aficionados to have admission to fashion shows which previously have only been accessed by media and industry types. “It’s an exciting opportunity for people to come along and to be able to sit where international media have sa

Anni Albers and Josef Albers The First Couple of Modern Design

Anni Albers and Josef Albers: The First Couple of Modern Design

Glass, steel, wood, silk, and wool in their hands became pared-down chairs or textured wall hangings. And this was in the early 20th century - decades before home-design stores like IKEA, Crate & Barrel, and Pottery Barn promised homeowners a completely designed environment.

The couple met in 1922 as students at Germany's now-famous Bauhaus school. Their teachers included artists Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Almost everything today's designers take for granted originated at the Bauhaus, including graphics used in advertising, stylish mass-produced furnishings, the International Style of architecture, even the modern kitchen layout. The Alberses, who imbibed the heady atmosphere of experimentation at the Bauhaus, are considered pioneers of modern design.

An exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum sets Josef's furnishings off against Anni's textiles, creating a conversation between them.

"Josef and Anni Albers: Designs for Living" is the first show to link the two artists at an especially formative period in their lives. "It takes Josef's glass constructions and Anni's wall hangings of the same years and juxtaposes them," says Nicholas Fox Weber, an exhibition curator and head of The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. "This is the most significant link in their work, and no one has ever put these works

In a Flap Over Frocks

In a Flap Over Frocks

Trelise Cooper caused a sensation last night at Fashion Week, transporting the fashion crowd back to 1920s speakeasy clubs. It was the sort of to-die-for gear that the Great Gatsby's lovely Daisy would have swooned over.

Cooper wowed the large crowd of nearly 800 people at the biggest show of the Air New Zealand-sponsored week.

She showed what was probably a record number of outfits - 35 of one of her labels and 70 of the eponymous collection.

There were sheer flapper dresses with intricate sequins, beaded coats, gauzy little matinee jackets in every possible combination.

Cooper also pulled out all the stops with softly-coloured tweed jackets, mammoth corsages, ballerina-print skirts and tulle skirts. Altogether, it was a total sensory overload.

But where Cooper sometimes overwhelms, this year the simple elegance of her evening wear shone through its luxurious embellishment.

The audience, which included a swag of celebrities and Cooper's moneyed clientele, left with dreams of evenings in deco-beaded shift dresses and days in neat-waisted jackets with mutton-leg sleeves. The first Fashion Week out ing for Workshop, Workshop Denim and Helen Cherry that followed Trelise Cooper offered up a sparer philosophy. Workshop and Workshop Denim did boys' and girls' jeans, trousers, knits and jackets - some with clever, studded tiki detailing for real, everyday

Tanya Carlson Hot Orchid Blooms on Fashion Week Stag

Tanya Carlson: Hot Orchid Blooms on Fashion Week Stag

Rock chicks glammed up in velvet satin and silks lent drama to the catwalk as Carlson unveiled her Winter 05 collection, 'Hot Orchid'.

With hair in sleek top-knots and pale faces with stark red lips, Tanya Carlson's models showed her penchant for rock royalty to a rocking soundtrack proving the girls do indeed Wear it Well as Rod Stewart would say, and were also Heroes just for one day as Bowie sang.

Pictured above, a model's look in a men's style suit jacket is softened with a satin pussy-bow blouse and long a-line skirt; as though she had to borrow her boyfriend's jacket out at the casino or after the ball.

Key shapes included floor-length, high-waisted frocks, high-waisted pants, elaborate sweeping skirts, and lavish gathered sleeves finished with tiny buttons. The collection gives an ironic twist to iconic fabrics and shapes, with influences from art nouveau to Edwardian - mixed with the dandified decadence of 70s rock icons.

"For me, it was an opportunity to really celebrate what Carlson is all about," Carlson says. "It brings together my favourite colours and fabrics, and explores the ritual and art of dressing up, where you really go to town with hair, makeup and shoes and commit to doing up lots of tiny buttons and fitting yourself into clothing that's waisted and restrained."
