Clare Phillips Shaping Up for a Career in Fashion Design

Clare Phillips: Shaping Up for a Career in Fashion Design

Okato College Year 13 student Clare Phillips has been selected to represent her school in the 2004 Bernina Secondary Schools Fashion Awards.

She will be up against 40 other entrants from schools all over New Zealand in the Excellence in Sewing Techniques and Processes category.

"The judging is based on the way it's all put together, not just the design," she said.

The winners are announced on November 8.

The 18-year-old entered the awards last year with the help of her teacher, but this year she is going it alone.

Her entry is based around a shirt she designed and made earlier in the year, and has been altered for this competition. "I made the pattern myself and it's kind of formal. It's a boned bodice which is then attached to a blouse," she said. "I'm also making a black, pin-tucked skirt with a bit of a flare to go with it."

So far, Clare has spent more than 15 hours making the shirt and is putting in more time on the skirt.

"It's taken a while, but I think it will only take a few more hours to get it all done," she said.

With the school year coming to an end, Clare already has her sights firmly set on the future.

"I'm entering the Spotlight ball-gown competition as well as the Taranaki Fashion Arts competition, and I've already been accepted into WITT for next year," she said.

Fur Designs Back In Fashions Spotlight

Fur Designs Back In Fashion's Spotlight

Fur is no longer a status symbol that only the rich and famous can afford, and faux fur is no longer an ugly alternative worn only by social protesters.

Both are part of a larger trend: fur — real or fake — as fashion.

Designers, manufacturers and retailers have embraced fur in all its forms this season, offering it in more shapes, styles and price points than one might have thought imaginable.

On the runway, established furrier and up-and-coming couturier J. Mendel used sheared mink on chiffon to create bolero jackets and capelets while Ann Taylor has a belted rabbit fur jacket and a fur felt fedora. Benjamin Cho, whose spring 2005 catwalk show was sponsored by the U.S. Humane Society, is experimenting with faux fur trench coats, and Kate Spade's faux Persian lamb purse has the same luxe look as the real thing.

You want color? Helen Yarmak dyes fox bright red and Kenneth Cole has pink rabbit handbags; Behnaz Sarafpour decorated a delicate lilac dress with fox trim and the most memorable piece from Michael Kors' fall collection was the purple knitted poncho in saga mink.

"Fur has come to mean much more than a mink coat, and, to that end, something to scrimp and save for and to be worn only on the most special occasion. Today, it is regarded as a new textile or fabric, and that's why it has become a standard part

Cherry Cotton Candys Cute Girls Collection

Cherry Cotton Candy's Cute Girl's Collection

Cherry Cotton Candy launched the new range at Carlson's catwalk show with a sexy, sassy collection of sportswear and witty references to cheerleaders in long socks with red lips.

Girls sang the Beastis Boys as the candy girls walked out in traniers and long socks with red pouts and 1950s coiffures. The sportswear range included kneelength swing skirts cut in shiny yellow sports knit fabric worn with hooded tops and cartoon print sweats.

A stand-out piece was a deep v-backed dress with chequered trim on the vee and cap sleeves. Gingham shirts and pastel shorts worn with tight suit jackets totally suited the soundtrack by grrl group The Donnas. It's post-feminist fashion for those that were never going to be tomboys.

Designed by two of Carlson's assistants, Cherry Cotton Candy is a delicious mixture of urban wear and out-there Japanese street fashions. It is a fun range of casual daywear that will appeal to early adopters who like a fusion of styles.

And that fusion is a result of two very different co-designers whose names helped inspire the Cherry Cotton Candy name - Cara Cotton (23) and Cherry Austin-Spivey, aka Miss Cherry Pie (22). "Cherry Cotton Candy is a little bit schizophrenic, brought about by the fact that our inspirations are so strikingly different. The range is juxtapositions of colour, fabric and styles.
