Turkish Fashion Fabric Exhibition: Grand Hyatt Features Turkish Fashion

Dark rich fall colors invited you to tables with fruit and gold coins. Colorful pieces of fabric ornamented the dining tables. Fabric squares were placed inside golden picture frames rendering the fabric a work of art. This Turkish- inspired display was what your eyes saw upon entering The New York Turkish Fashion Fabric Exhibition.

Fourty-nine major Turkish textile and fabric manufacturers exhibited the latest trends in textiles.
The event took place at the Empire Ballroom at the Grand Hyatt New York (Park Avenue at Grand Central) featured on July 20-21. The event was organized by the Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters' Associations that presented the latest trends in fabric for fall and winter 2005-2006.

The Istanbul Textile and Apparel Exporters' Associations (ITKIB) is the leading textile industry association in Turkey, bringing together 28,000 manufacturers of textiles, apparel, carpets, leather, leather wear and ready to wear garments.

ITKIB, the organizer of the TFFE, attributes the growth to a yearlong aggressive marketing and public relations campaign in the U.S. in order to bring Turkish fabrics and branded ready-to-wear to buyer's attention. ITKIB is the source of key U.S. and European labels. The previous exhibitions have drawn 1,100 buyers from U.S. and international companies including Donna Karan,

The Brand Name for People Opposed to Brands

The Brand Name for People Opposed to Brands

New Balance sneakers are favored by anti-globalization protesters, but once black-and-white choices are fading to gray.

The New Balance walking shoes are not the nicest ones in the store. In fact, they're quite ugly. They don't have a drop of the charm oozing from Nike or the panther-like nobility of Pumas or the soothing colorful brilliance of Adidas. Unlike the latest, alluring fashion of delicate sneakers, most New Balance shoes have a chaotic and coarse design. They look wide and heavy and the logo - the letter N - appears to have been printed on them randomly. Any sense of harmony is shattered.

But when these shoes were purchased two weeks ago, they were the only conceivable option - at NIS 350 in three installments. The hand and the eye may indeed have been drawn to other shoes - nice and tempting - but the head said: No. It's prohibited.

Only New Balance has acquired a reputation as a fair company: it's the only company that still manufactures sneakers in the United States. Nike is seen as the epitome of global evil. Adidas and Puma are reportedly just as bad. There is no alternative, the only choice is New Balance.

This is the brand name for people opposed to brand names. "I surveyed the shoes worn by protesters," wrote a reporter recently in a Florida newspaper article on the anti-globalization protests

Stephanie Jae-Eun Baik Wins Schuetz Design Competition

Stephanie Jae-Eun Baik Wins Schuetz Design Competition

Stephanie Jae-Eun Baik, G.G., took top honors at the 28th annual George A. Schuetz Design Competition with her suite of tie tacks and matching cufflinks. The international competition is dedicated to men’s jewelry design.

Baik used a square piece of onyx with diamond linear accents and yellow gold beads in a channel setting. A rounded piece of onyx, diamond, and a gold piece are attached. Baik, a native of Korea who previously worked for an Italian jewelry company, studied at GIA's Vicenza, Italy, location. She is an alumna of GIA’s Jewelry Design class and accepted a position teaching design at GIA Korea just before learning about her win.

Ranked by a panel of independent industry specialists, the entries were judged blindly, based on the same criteria that is used in GIA’s jewelry design classes: design, wearability, manufacturability, and appeal.

Drorit Ronnen, a design student in Israel, earned second place for her unique cufflinks made of white gold and triangle-cut diamonds.

Third place winner So Yung Yu, of South Korea, who recently completed GIA’s Jewelry Design class and Working with Wax Extension class, designed a white gold tie tack that features an emerald-cut black diamond, accented by yellow gold and onyx.

Named in honor of men’s jewelry designer and entrepreneur George Schuetz, the Schuetz Des
