Hilfilger to Host CBS Design Contest

Hilfilger to Host CBS Design Contest

Fashion mogul Tommy Hilfiger has teamed up with CBS network to introduce new reality series focused on bringing up new design talent. The series, tentatively entitled “The Cut,” will feature 16 up and coming designers competing for a chance to design a collection under Tommy Hilfiger’s label.

The contestants will test their skills in talent, business, sales and marketing competitions, featured in 13 episodes of CBS midseason series. The style council, comprised of art, fashion and entertainment experts and Hilfiger, the series host, will eliminate one contestant each week.

"The road to success is not easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion, it's possible to achieve the American dream," reads Hilfiger’s statement. "'The Cut' is going to give someone the opportunity of a lifetime and help that person achieve his or her dreams."

"We think the world that we are placing this in is inherently telegenic," said president of programming and production at Lions Gate Television, which is producing the series with Pilgrim Films and Television Kevin Beggs.

"It cries out to be on television -- it's full of beautiful and interesting people, and it shows a world that most of us never really traffic in."

Design Dreams Get Real

Design Dreams Get Real

They were design students till Saturday night. Now they are designers set to storm the fashion industry. The hard work of students of the National Institute of Fashion Design, Lindsay Street, was on show at the annual graduating batch fashion fiesta at the Oberoi Grand, presented in association with The Telegraph.

Nervous faces waiting to decipher the crowd reaction to their blood, sweat and tears and proud parents clapping their hearts out for every collection made sitting through the four-hour gala worth the effort.

With big names like Wendell Rodricks, Sharbari Dutta, Anamika Khanna and Sumedha Saraogi from the fashion fraternity judging the event, the final winners had double the reason to pat their backs. The two categories under which the participants were judged were fashion designing and textiles.

A mix of georgette, cotton, raw silk and jute dominated the fabrics used, and the styles were mostly contemporary with even ghagras slimming down to straight cuts and cholis going the western backless way.

The themes were inspired by everything from the teachings of Osho to how the mind of a prisoner works. In a gutsy move, a collection depicting same-sex love saw female models walking the ramp holding hands with mutual attraction clear from their expressions.

After what must have been a harrowing task for the j

Andrea Jovine Back in the Fashion Game

Andrea Jovine: Back in the Fashion Game

After five years of devoting her creative energies to interior design, gardening and family, she was enticed back to the playing field for what could be the best reason of all: "I became the consumer, and I had a hard time finding clothes that fit me."

That switch in roles "gave me a completely different perspective," she said.

Of course, she didn't jump back into the business just to design clothes for herself. It was to design for women such as herself. Women who appreciate the ease and comfort of modern knit dressing, whether it be a red trench coat or a print jacket with velvet trim.

"There was still a void in the market for knitwear, which is the bulk of the business," Jovine said. "The only reason to come back was if there was a need, and apparently, there was a void in what I do."

In fall 2003, Jovine relaunched her collection, keeping her signature knits but focusing on pattern, novelty and texture. Extra attention is given to details -- seaming that gives a jacket more shape, faux fur trim on a sweater, reversible jackets, pattern linings, velvet trim.

She also mixes in other fabrications, such as a charmeuse blouse for those times when women don't want to wear knit head to toe.

"It's still about real dressing," Jovine said.

Her collection is available at Dillard's in Penn Square Mall, with
