 2009 Imagination Prize to Jakob SchlaepferThe international "Premiere Vision" trade fair in Paris, which attracted 1200 exhibitors, saw the presentation of the four first ever "PV Awards" for outstanding textiles.A Jakob Schlaepfer design was one of those selected: a three-dimensional creation of foam tipped with gold leather and applied to transparent tulle. A distinguished jury, consisting of representatives of Hermes, Prada, Louis Vuitton and the international trade press, awarded it the prestigious "Imagination Prize" for 2009. This is given for the most daring and most surprising fabric in terms of material, technique and finishing.  First UNESCO World Forum on Culture and the Cultural IndustriesIn cooperation with the Italian Government, the Lombardy Region and the city of Monza, UNESCO is organizing the First UNESCO World Forum on Culture and the Cultural Industries, which will take place at the Villa Reale in Monza, Italy from 24 to 26 September, 2009.In the spirit of previous high-visibility operations undertaken by UNESCO in the field of heritage protection, the Organization is launching a novel initiative intended to bring together decision-makers, creators and the private sector to discuss the role of culture in and for development. Conceived as a platform that will bring people together to share ideas on specific topics varying from one edition to the next, the Forum's objective is to illustrate the potential of the creativity, innovation and excellence that nourish the cultural industries. The dynamism of the cultural sector is measured not only in terms of its contribution to GDP, but also its power to transform societies. The new millennium has witnessed the growing strength of the cultural industries. Accordingly, a new approach to development strategies based on creativity as a source of competitive advantage is now at the forefront of discussions.  Reconstruction: Live Competition United Music and Fashion in Innovative WaysThe School of Fashion at Parsons The New School for Design collaborated with Louis Vuitton, a worldwide leader in luxury, for a live competition on September 17 that united music and fashion in innovative ways.Working in real time in the Parsons storefront gallery on Fifth Avenue, 10 teams of two students remixed pieces from the Parsons archive and signature Louis Vuitton pieces designed by LV Artistic Director and Parsons alumnus Marc Jacobs to create conceptual looks based on historic silhouettes. The winning team of Min Sun Kim and Lydia (Yeo Chung) Kim created a dramatic evening gown that incorporated menswear elements such as blazer lapels, trench coats, and a hand-painted hemline, each won $2,500 and an invitation to visit the Louis Vuitton headquarters in Paris. All of the looks will be on view through September 25 at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons The New School for Design, 66 Fifth Avenue, New York.
