Focus: Green Goes Blue

For the designer in search of the perfect green product to specify, the bad news is, it doesn't exist, except in nature.

And once you remove it from nature and modify it for your purposes, it won't be perfectly green anymore.

In reality, making any decision on sustainability often involves a lesser-of-two-evils scenario: designer and client need to identify together which sustainable goals are most important to the project (i.e. energy, waste, resources, recyclability, etc.) and specify accordingly.

For this reason, the product knowledge that can help designers make the most informed decision is vital to the green specification process.

Italian Interior Design Institute Istituti Callegari Milano to Open Branch in Mumbai

The "Istituti Callegari Milano" - an Italian Fashion and Interior Design Institute having 120 branches in Italy, has announced its launch in India.

The institute's first branch will come up in Andheri, Mumbai which will be a replica of the Italian Institute.

"Istituti Callegari, aims to provide a high quality teaching and learning experience for all our students.

As an institution, Istituti Callegari is committed to help its students to achieve their full potential through a range of professional courses", an official from the institute told NNE.

"The Mumbai branch of the institute will have only 18 students in each batch to ensure personal attention with the faculty", the official added.

Inaugural DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship

DHL, the world's leading express and logistics company, is seeking emerging fashion exporters to enter the inaugural DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship.

The scholarship aims to identify New Zealand's hottest up-and-coming fashion exporter and assist them in achieving international growth.

Entrants are asked to complete an official application and submit a design portfolio, which will be judged by fashion industry leaders.

DHL Express NZ, general manager, Derek Anderson, says: "We are pleased to continue our support of the fashion industry in this way.

This is an important sector in New Zealand's exporting landscape and we are excited about the opportunity to work with a designer and expand their international exporting potential."

The recipient of the scholarship will receive a prize package that includes international freight to the value of NZ$10,000 and coaching in freight and logistics from DHL Express; as well as an individually tailored export mentoring package from Fashion Industry New Zealand (FINZ) and annual FINZ membership.

The "DHL Express Fashion Export Scholarship" is open to New Zealand fashion designers who have been exporting for less than four years and currently hold at least one export account.

Applications close at 5.00pm on Friday, 31 October, 2008.

Pantone Fashion Color Report Spring 2009

Pantone today released the Pantone Fashion Color Report Spring 2009.

The report features the top 10 colors for women's fashion for spring '09, along with designer sketches, quotes and headshots.

The availability of the Pantone Fashion Color Report coincides with the beginning of New York Fashion Week and is available free-of-charge.

According to the report, blue and purple lead the top 10 hues for spring '09.

The palette also includes pops of vibrant color representing the optimism of the season, combined with sophisticated neutrals to ground the palette and provide stability in an unpredictable economic climate.

A spectrum of greens rounds out the report, evoking a sense of freshness and new beginnings.

"New York's fashion designers encourage hopeful attitudes with lively colors, while sophisticated, grounded hues address the need for stability in times of economic uncertainty," said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.
