Reconstruction Live Competition United Music and Fashion in Innovative Ways

Reconstruction: Live Competition United Music and Fashion in Innovative Ways

The School of Fashion at Parsons The New School for Design collaborated with Louis Vuitton, a worldwide leader in luxury, for a live competition on September 17 that united music and fashion in innovative ways.

Working in real time in the Parsons storefront gallery on Fifth Avenue, 10 teams of two students remixed pieces from the Parsons archive and signature Louis Vuitton pieces designed by LV Artistic Director and Parsons alumnus Marc Jacobs to create conceptual looks based on historic silhouettes.

The winning team of Min Sun Kim and Lydia (Yeo Chung) Kim created a dramatic evening gown that incorporated menswear elements such as blazer lapels, trench coats, and a hand-painted hemline, each won $2,500 and an invitation to visit the Louis Vuitton headquarters in Paris.

All of the looks will be on view through September 25 at the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons The New School for Design, 66 Fifth Avenue, New York.

"Since the founding of the company, Louis Vuitton has been a great supporter of creativity and innovation in the worlds of both fashion and art," said Daniel Lalonde, President and Chief Executive Officer, Louis Vuitton North America.

"It is a thrill for us to work with these talented fashion design students from Parsons, one of the premier schools of art and design in the world."

YLB for Wallis

YLB for Wallis

If Wallis isn't at the top of your shopping list normally it will have climbed up more than a few places by the weekend.

Yasmin Le Bon, one of the world's original supermodels, married to Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon and mother of three, has not only put her name to British high street chain Wallis, but has designed and created an exclusive collection for them.

There's no denying that Wallis isn't renowned for cutting edge fashion and with a younger sister like Topshop always in the limelight it's hardly surprising they've fallen into the shadows in the last few years.

Until now, back with vengeance and a super heroine who goes by the name of Yasmin Le Bon leading the way, Wallis are sure to pick up more than a few fashion credentials this autumn.

Yasmin's collection of clothing and jewellery is a true reflection of herself as her inspiration derives from her Persian roots and her very own wardrobe.

The collection is sexy yet demure and comprises of 20 versatile pieces that are classically timeless.

Key pieces that really stand out are the cream silk tunic with a delicate purple floral design and matching silk necktie and a green one shoulder maxi dress that Yasmin has already been snapped wearing.

Her creations are understated and luxuriously chic, and all polished off with ethnic and vintage inspired jewelery.

Madeleine Vionnet

Madeleine Vionnet

Famous for the "bias cut," Madeleine Vionnet's sophisticated approach to couture remains a pervasive influence today.

Eschewing artificial and restrictive padding and stiffening, she liberated the female form with designs that integrated movement and comfort into women's fashion.

She also championed unusual fabrics that were luxurious and sensual yet simple and modern-chiffon, silk, crêpe de chine, gabardine, and satin.

Her most revolutionary creations-the handkerchief dress, cowl neck, and halter top-cling to and seamlessly move with the wearer.

Vionnet's principles of elegance, movement, architectural form, and timeless style continue to inform contemporary fashion.

This lavishly illustrated book showcases Vionnet's daringly original designs worn by 80 internationally famous models photographed especially for this book alongside original patterns and archival images by such icons as Horst and Steichen.

Amazing Cartier Jewelry Design Since 1937

Amazing Cartier: Jewelry Design Since 1937

Cartier's peerless designers have continued to amaze decade after decade-from the 1930s into the twenty-first century - with their fanciful and trendsetting creations.

Figurative pieces comprise a significant portion of the house's collection - a veritable menagerie that includes bejeweled roosters and cobras cohabitating with tigers and angelfish.

In addition to whimsical fauna and resplendent flora, Cartier crafted items of precisely mastered abstraction, from virtuoso work in gold to chromatic harmonies ranging from subtle to bold.

The second half of the twentieth century was to provide an inexhaustible repertoire of forms for decorative objects and finery.

Close-ups of hundreds of Cartier pieces are supplemented with archival drawings, as well as society and fashion photographs.

This volume chronicles the rise of a pioneering firm and illustrates the power of constantly renewed styles based on a fine balance between imagination and know-how, creativity and experience.

Fashion writer Nadine Coleno situates the emergence of Cartier's creations in their historical and stylistic context.

This volume offers an eloquent tribute to the multiple talents that have transformed the name of a dynasty of jewelers into the universal gold standard in jewelry design.
