Fashion Show Paris Collections 2006

Fashion Show: Paris Collections 2006

Paris is the undisputed center of the fashion world, and "Fashion Show: Paris Collections 2006" demonstrates why fashion remains a fine art.

Featuring runway garments from the spring and fall-winter collections of ten influential couturiers and designers, the exhibition explores the ideas and inspirations motivating Paris fashion today, and why, in an age of globalization and instantaneous communication, this venerable city remains the fashion capital.

The city has been a magnet for stylish men and women since the seventeenth century, but the French fashion industry has evolved considerably over the centuries-and never more than in the last few years.

Recent assessments of the current state of Paris fashion have varied widely, with some pundits announcing its death, and others claiming that it is closer to fine art than ever before.

The designers highlighted in this exhibition-Azzedine Alaia, Hussein Chalayan, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, John Galliano for Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix, Maison Martin Margiela, Olivier Theyskens for Rochas, Valentino, Viktor & Rolf, and Yohji Yamamoto-bring a unique and clear vision to their work, while still maintaining the high level of craftsmanship for which Paris is justly famous.

Spreadshirt Announces Design Competition Winners

Spreadshirt Announces Design Competition Winners

Spreadshirt is proud to announce of this year's The Draw design competition co-sponsored by the London Design Festival.

Running from August until mid-October, the international competition saw nearly 1000 entries and over 125 finalists from designers in Europe and the United States.

The final designs were open to public voting, and the final decision was made by a jury panel comprised of representatives from Spreadshirt, the London Design Festival, Icon Magazine and Castle Magazine.

First place went to the Alexis Nicholson and her "Spacemen" t-shirt design.

A UK-based freelance designer, she describes the winning design as "part of a series... from the (slightly exaggerated) idea that there are so many bombs being thrown about all over the world that the empty shells should used for something...

The designs are all suggestions of how to put them to good use".

Second place went to the Swiss designer Blaise Coutaz (aka Tutuf), and his potted umbrella-plants design "London Spirit".

But rather than based on his memory of London ("If I had wanted to illustrate my stay in London, I would have create a snowman and ice"), it plays with the idea of umbrellas growing and opening from the water sprinkled on them.

A favourite among designers (both first and second placers thought it would win), "Postapocaust" by Norbert Reissig too

Searching Visually

Searching Visually

Rather than spending a lifetime searching for items on the net with text, like.com allows for a search on favourite items to be placed based on appearance, finding items with similar colours, shapes and textures.

For example, you like Mischa Barton's earrings.

Click on the section featuring her earrings and like.com will find matching styles.

If you prefer to search for more items based only on colour or texture or shape, then dial up or dial down your preference and place your search.

With 200 retailers currently participating, like.com will be adding over 30,000 items to its catalogue each day and in the coming months consumers will be able to search using their own pictures.
