Thanks to technological advancements, the practices of fashion and architecture have never been so intertwined: pleating, seaming, folding, and draping are now part of the architectural vocabulary and garments of conceptual sophistication and structural complexity are making their way down the runways and onto the streets.
Designed to protect, shelter, and allow self expression, these two creative principles have been, and continue to be driving forces in our society.
From November 19, 2006 to March 5, 2007, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) presents the first major museum exhibition devoted to the extensive and telling similarities between architecture and fashion design.
Skin + Bones: Parallel Practices in Fashion and Architecture will be on view at the museum's Arata Isozaki designed building at MOCA Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles.
The exhibition occupies the entire museum in an installation designed by New-York based architects Calvin Tsao and Zack McKown.
Over 40 members of the fashion and design community have contributed to the exhibit making it the most extensive fashion related exhibition ever to be presented on the West coast.

Italian designer Frida Giannini energetically revisited the 1960s for Gucci, while Antonio Marras' otherworldly romance had a timeless quality.
Upbeat optimism shone through at Gucci which has very short black A-line dresses, pepped up with criss-crossing bands of red and fuchsia silk, in store for spring-summer 2007.
Indeed, the designer even allowed the vivid colours, in both matte and gloss, to run along the legs of straight black pants, even to outline the waist or the pockets on short black skirts.
Wide belts with a triple buckle added emphasis.
But for softer embellishment, Giannini covered embroidered flowers in pink, red and brick over the front and back of trousers, or as the shirt front of a short-sleeved mini-dress.
The allure of high-shine also held its own for a white patent coat, cut short and straight, adorned with a belt of tiny mirrors, or a trapeze dress embroidered with pearls and gold.

Dolce & Gabbana proved their love for showgirl exuberance on Thursday with a collection of aggressive black corset dresses, buttocks-hugging skirts and sequined gowns in the colors of the rainbow.
A show that screamed sex and money entertained an audience that had felt mildly bored after a series of wearable, retro-inspired collections during Milan fashion week.
A metallic molded corset dress with exaggerated hips -- think Marie Antoinette in the space age -- and platform heels that caused several models to wobble dangerously were certainly not meant to be practical.
But there was at least one person in the room who was ready to wear Dolce & Gabbana's crystal-encrusted, embroidered, swirly gowns with billowing sleeves: pop star Kylie Minogue.
"If there ever was an opportunity to wear these clothes it's on stage.

Carnaby Street is being re-born on the catwalks of Milan Fashion Week.
Mini skirts, Chelsea boots, platform shoes and psychedelic prints are the order of the day as Milanese designers embrace the once-famed Swinging London of the 1960s.
Forty years after Mary Quant fired the first broadside in the hemlines war, the thigh-high skirt is re-emerging as the look for spring/summer 2007.
With long hair ironed flat or caught in simple ponytails, the models are striding out on the catwalks, long greyhound legs flashing under thigh-high hemlines as a 21st century reincarnation of the King's Road "dolly birds" who once helped make London the world headquarters of the Sixties youthquake.
The Gucci designer Frida Giannini placed the powerful status brand firmly behind the mini revival with her spring/summer 2007 collection last night.
The Twiggy-style A-line dress, stopping short a few inches south of the derriere, was the key shape.

The British capital has brightened up the fashion world this week with an ultra vibrant display of hot hues.
In contrast to the predominantly nude and black palette seen on the New York catwalks, designers including Paul Smith have opted for summery citrus shades and vivid multi-coloured creations.
Delhi-based designer Manish Arora, who dresses most Bollywood stars, set the colourful tone at the start of the five-day event with a spring/summer collection he said was "inspired by a paradise forest".
And so it was, drawing gasps of admiration from the front-rows.
