![]() Mayer Fabrics & Savannah College Of Art & Design Complete CollabborationMayer Fabrics and the Savannah College of Art & Design have completed a collaboration on a unique opportunity for the School of Design's Department of Fibers.The school's spring semester offering included a 400 level course entitled 'Concept to Consumer: Textiles for Interiors'. The class was designed to impart an understanding of how textiles are researched and developed into products useful for today's market. Under the instruction of Professor Jeremy Noonan, students gained insight beyond the classroom and drew upon the expertise of Lucia Kennerly, Mayer Fabrics' director of product development. SCAD student designers included Adelyn Janulis, Nicole Schlesinger, Melanie Wilcox, Allison Adderton, Katherine Dagen, Elizabeth Aubin-Barrett and Allyson Burke. The class was tasked to create industry compatible solutions for commercial interiors with emphasis on the collaborative practices through the research and development process. Research included studying commercial applications, interior trends and textile constructions. Students explored the relationship between textile design and commercial applications, collaborated on appropriate solutions, and developed presentation techniques to convey their ideas. added by Levent OZLER |

![]() Sustainable Textiles: Life Cycle and Environmental ImpactEnvironmental issues are playing an increasingly important role in the textile industry, both from the point of view of government regulation and consumer expectations.Sustainable textiles reviews ways of achieving more sustainable materials and technologies as well as improving recycling in the industry. The first part of the book discusses ways of improving sustainability at various points in the supply chain. Chapters discuss how sustainability can be integrated into textile design, ensuring more sustainable production of both natural and synthetic fibres, improving sustainability in processes such as dyeing as well as more environmentally friendly technologies including enzyme and plasma technologies. ![]() Pattern Design 2009 ConferenceCelebrating their first year, the Center for Pattern Design will host a Pattern Design Conference to bring together master pattern makers who will share their insights, their designs and the pattern techniques that make them a critical part of the fashion industry.Keynote speaker will be Gail Gondek, pattern designer for Chado Ralph Rucci, Geoffrey Beene, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, and Peter Som. Her talk, Concept to Catwalk, will shed light on the often mysterious pattern design process that produces a fashion masterpiece at the highest levels. Her work has been shown at the Paris Couture and Prete-a-Porter shows and regularly at New York's Fashion Week for the past 20 years. Many of her pieces have also been displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Fashion Museum at Kent State University, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA). In addition to Ms. Gondek, other speakers include Julian Roberts, one of the most innovative designers in the UK and the inventor of Subtraction Cutting. He has shown 13 collections at London's Fashion Week in addition to being a film maker for SuperSuper Magazine and a consultant to the BBC. ![]() Gorgeous in Green: Vanderbilt University to Focus on Green FashionVanderbilt University will be viewing eco-friendly, sustainable fashions in September at a fashion show and a couture display.The "Gorgeous in Green" eco-fashion show will feature Nashville-area designers and stores with a commitment to sustainability through products they design and sell. The fashion show will take place on Thursday, Sept. 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. on The Commons Lawn near Hank Ingram House on Vanderbilt's campus. The show will include lines from Clothing XChange, ASK Apparel, Scarlett Begonia, Prophetik, Whole Body by Whole Foods, Natural Oasis and more. During the show, representatives from each store or line will speak to the audience about what makes their line sustainable and/or environmentally friendly.
