US Cotton Ad Banned Over Green Claims

An ad campaign by the US cotton industry has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority for making misleading claims promoting the material as an environmentally- friendly product.

The campaign, for the Cotton Council International trading as Cotton USA, consisted of a magazine and poster ad.

The ad used the line "Soft, sensual and sustainable, it's Cotton USA!".

Advertising regulators received three complaints challenging the term "sustainable", arguing that cotton is a "pesticide- and insecticide- intensive crop" that could "seriously deplete" groundwater supplies where it is grown in the US.

Think of Adidas by Way of Porsche

At least twice a year, a fashion reporter will write an article about "The New Modesty," declaring that clothes are finally returning to well-constructed tailoring of subtlety and restraint.

Then, in the same publication, you will see a fashion spread of an impossibly chiseled man in a python codpiece straddling a Russian supermodel wearing a bikini made of pink dental floss, and you wonder what that writer was on; and if humanity will ever be sophisticated again.

Well, dear reader, I may be about to make the same mistake because - guess what? The New Modesty is finally here! At least it seems as if it is - in the window of the new, sharply cool Y-3 store in the West Village.

Behind its glass-paneled garage door, a faceless male and female mannequin are displayed.

The male form is in a baseball cap, sensible-fitting jacket and knee-length shorts that have retro baseball uniform pinstripes.

The female wears a capped-sleeve blouse, a long skirt with floppy pockets and a wide-brimmed gardening hat.

At a glance, you could mistake them for a humble Amish couple in the Pennsylvania Dutch countryside, or an international D.J. team boarding a plane to do a gig in Reykjavik, or both at the same time.

SAIC Fashion Show 2008

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago will host its annual Fashion Show and Exhibition on May 1st and 2nd in the recently opened Sage Studios for Fashion Design and the School's new exhibition space, both on the 7th floor of the historic Sullivan Center, 33 S. State Street.

Produced independently by its students and faculty, the SAIC Fashion Show continues its seventy-five-year tradition of showcasing innovative undergraduate student fashion collections, ranging from the elegant to the ready-to-wear, and from the conceptual to the socially engaging.

SAIC's Fashion Design program is uniquely situated within the diverse structure of an arts school.

"Creativity is high at SAIC because our students find inspiration in traditional fashion design, as well as other studio arts-painting, sculpture, architecture, film, ceramics, and video production to name a few," says department chair Nick Cave.

"Students freely pursue experimentation for a unique point of view in concept design, cloth manipulation, and hands-on accessory and garment construction."

Renovation of the Fashion studios in the historic Sullivan Center was made possible by a generous gift from Board Member and SAIC parent Melissa Sage Fadim, a supporter of the Fashion Design department for twenty years.
