Fashion East Three New Winners to Watch

Fashion East: Three New Winners to Watch

Danielle Scutt, Louise Goldin and Meadham/Kirchhoff will take to the Fashion East catwalk in September as the latest line-up of new fashion front liners.

Scutt, who describes her collection as "clothes you can have a fight in", was chosen by Phoebe Philo to win the Chloe Award for best designer after her Saint Martins MA graduate show last year, while Goldin's graduate collection was exclusively produced and ordered by Selfridges and Benjamin Kirchhoff and Edward Meadham launched their first ever womenswear designs on the Fashion East catwalk in February - so impressing the judges that they were invited back a second time.

Miami Swim Shows Take Beach to the Street

Miami Swim Shows Take Beach to the Street

Not even the heat could stop the fashion elite, celebrities and Miami's beach bunnies from attending the second season of the Sunglass Hut Miami Swim Shows at the Raleigh Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida.

The festivities began on Saturday, July 15, where swimwear shows at dusk gave way to nonstop nightlife with parties celebrating everything from the new T-Mobile Sidekick 3 to the 60th Anniversary of the bikini.

Rosa Cha by Amir Slama kicked off the runway schedule with his very unique transformation of a sleeping beauty story.

"This collection is inspired by a princess that was sleeping for many years," said Slama. "She woke up to find herself in Brazil near the World Cup games."

That would explain the romantic fabrics inspired by corsetry and lingerie infused with sporty silhouettes, a brilliant marriage despite the strong contrast.

Throughout the collection, Slama experimented with crochet halters, lace and cutout details and embroidery, but muted the feminine fabrics by opting for boy short bottoms, striped bandeau tops, and mesh detailing on long-sleeved shirtdresses.

His colors, aside from the short burst of light pink and ivory, paid homage to the Brazilian flag of navy, hunter green and gold.

Skirting the Border Between Art and Fashion

Skirting the Border Between Art and Fashion

The grand architectural experiment that is the Prada Epicenter on Rodeo Drive is exploring its potential as something more than a clothing store.

On Friday, "Waist Down: Skirts by Miuccia Prada," an exhibit of 100 of the Italian designer's skirts, went on display in the 24,000-square-foot technological marvel designed by Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren.

With the addition of the unusual skirt exhibit, the store, built in 2004 as a conceptual merger of art, fashion and commerce, becomes a gallery space where one can ponder: Is a skirt art?

The exhibit, which ranges from Prada's first women's collection in 1988 to the present, was conceived and designed by the think-tank arm of Koolhaas' Office for Metropolitan Architecture to illustrate the ideas and craftsmanship of Prada's skirt designs.

Prada fans might have been happier with a display of purses, which in Prada's hands revolutionized the focus of luxury goods companies, status-conscious consumers and knockoff artists the world over. Skirts, however, were simply more interesting.

Sao Paulo Previews Brilliant Hues for Summer 2007

Sao Paulo Previews Brilliant Hues for Summer 2007

As Sao Paulo fashion week kicked off on Wednesday, Brazil's top designers proved there's plenty to look forward to for summer 2007.

Elegant sundresses in brilliant hues made a bold and beautiful impact on the runways as did the metallic-inspired creations that continue one of this year's hottest trends.

The audience at the Iodice show was treated to a stunning collection of sophisticated swimwear cover-ups in sunshine shades.

If the designs on the runway were anything to go by, next year's fashion savvy beach-goers will be leaving their kaftans at home.

Instead, luxury sundresses are the ultimate in poolside chic - adorned with tropical floral designs in jewel-like shades of rich purples, turquoise, hot pinks and golden yellows.

Major Balenciaga Exhibit in Paris Shows Perfect Princess-worthy Couture

Major Balenciaga Exhibit in Paris Shows Perfect Princess-worthy Couture

A luscious drape of silk.

A frothy swirl of skirts.

The word elegant doesn't do justice to the perfect gowns on show in a new Paris retrospective on Cristobal Balenciaga, the couturier of couturiers.

These clothes are mouthwatering.

There are dresses for every colour of sorbet.

There is a red velvet coat with luxurious, sensual pleats worthy of a Renaissance painting, and any number of precision-cut lace black dresses that frame the decollete just so.

The exhibit at the Museum of Fashion and Textiles, which opens Thursday, features the Spanish designer's work from 1937, when he opened his house in Paris, until it closed in 1968, four years before he died.

It also shows off the clothes of current Balenciaga designer Nicolas Ghesquiere, who reinvented the house and helped curate the exhibit.

The Frenchman just made headlines for designing Nicole Kidman's wedding dress and for appearing on Time magazine's list of 100 influential people.
