2007 EDFF Ecco Domani Searches for Fashion Designers of Tomorrow

2007 EDFF: Ecco Domani Searches for Fashion Designers of Tomorrow

Be one of the six lucky designers to join the ranks of some of the biggest names in the world of fashion.

The search is on for fashion stars of tomorrow, as the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation (EDFF), established by stylish Ecco Domani Italian wines, launches its sixth annual season.

Six promising fashion designers - five womenswear and one menswear - could win an extraordinary opportunity to showcase their collection at New York's fall fashion week.

The EDFF awards each come with a generous grant of $25,000 to help produce an unforgettable show.

Some of today's hottest designers including Zac Posen, Peter Som, Proenza Schouler, Doo Ri, Trovata and Brian Reyes are past winners.

"We were so honored to have been given the support from the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation for our first runway show during New York Fashion Week.

It allowed us to take part in one of the grandest traditions of New York City," said Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte, 2005 EDFF winners.

"We are forever grateful to Ecco Domani and the foundation for their guidance, insight, and for their belief in our label.

It was such a dream to be able to bring our vision to life."

Graduate Fashion Week: Talented Young Brits with Designs on the World Stage

Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Alberta Ferretti: the names might be foreign but the designers are now likely to be as British as a bowler hat.

Behind the great brands, British fashion graduates are engaged in a covert takeover and the full extent of their advance was in evidence at Graduate Fashion Week.

Student fashion shows are supposed to be the place for fabulous parades of wildly improbable outfits.

But the audience at this year's graduate show, on Wednesday evening in London, saw shockingly wearable clothing.

The £20,000 top prize went to James Lawrence, of the University of Northumbria, for a collection of white jackets, nude knitwear and high-waisted trousers, after four days of shows bringing together 1,000 students from 42 textile and design colleges.

For the first time, representatives from seven fashion headhunting agencies had taken stands at the exhibition.

Barry Nathan, a scout for American labels including Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and Gap, was in the audience.

There might be nothing new in finding British designers at the creative helm.

For a decade, Alexander McQueen and John Galliano have been flying the flag in Paris.

But, increasingly, British-trained students are being plucked to work behind the scenes: look carefully and it's the Brits who predominate in design studios all

The Next Big Names in Fashion

The Next Big Names in Fashion

This may be the first time you've heard of fashion labels Thakoon, Doo.ri and Rodarte, but it won't be the last.

Meet the nominees for this year's emerging talent award from the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America.

In a business that's all about buzz, Thakoon, Doo.ri and Rodarte are the names on the lips of fashion insiders these days.

Doo.ri won the Swarovski Perry Ellis Prize at the CFDA annual awards event on June 5, 2006.

But for all three newcomers, simply having the attention of the press, retailers, stylists and top-tier designers who select the nominees could help push these up-and-comers toward style stardom.

Fashion forms Opinion

Fashion forms Opinion

How much opinion do you think a voting on 7 young fashion designers can cause?

The opinions vary from expressions of personal closeness with the designer, technical statements of fashion experts to very creative and funny comments about the sketches for the Fashion Award under the theme "Dress up for Mozart - Rock up Rococo!".

The catalyst for the opinion-forming discussion on fashion is the public voting for the 7 Selected of the Triumph International Fashion Award 2006.

"The voting is without obligation for the voters to post their opinion or justification for their choice.

Latest since Harry Frankfurt's philosophical analysis of "Bullshit" we know that not every opinion is meaningful so sometimes it is better to say nothing.

Under these aspects it is much more astonishing how many participants in the voting support their opinion with technical arguments or post sometimes simply funny statements." Dr. Karin Sawetz, publisher fashionoffice.

At this time the Austrian-American designer Kirsten Hiller has got the most statements.

No other designs of the 7 Selected have been so often attributed with the word "sexy".

Her work "rocks the best".

When Life Imitates Art the Results Are Sincerely Flattering

When Life Imitates Art the Results Are Sincerely Flattering

When Yves Saint Laurent declared himself "a failed painter" in 1992, he spoke for frustrated fashion designers everywhere.

This summer it is almost impossible to walk along a British high street without stopping to check that you haven't ambled into the National Gallery by mistake.

Mark Rothko seems to have resurrected himself at Gap; Vivienne Westwood has made off with Henri Matisse's life works and transposed them directly on to her dresses and Donna Karan has become the designer-cum-art student, taking Piet Mondrian's stiff and rigid lines, chopping them up and throwing them on to some white leather coats.

If this isn't fashion dressed up as art, then what is?
