U.S. clothing giant Polo Ralph Lauren plans to stop using animal pelts in all the company's products, the New York-based fashion house said.
The Independent reported that the decision is seen as a victory for animal rights campaigners who have repeatedly shunned the use of fur for fashion. Polo Ralph Lauren's halt on fur will begin with the 2006 Christmas shopping season.
The decision to reject fur also is the first by a major fashion chain since Calvin Klein made a similar vow in the 1990s, The Independent said.
The company's decision was a victory for the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the newspaper said.
Sporting the tag-line, I'd rather go naked than wear fur, PETA has aggressively pursued a stop to the sale of furs.
It also has repeatedly targeted celebrities who wear fur.
Polo Ralph Lauren said the company will donate leftover items including fur to charities for distribution among the poor.

Pop star Britney Spears has been inspired by baby Sean Preston to delve into kids' fashion, according to reports.
The Toxic hitmaker is planning to bring out her very own line of childrenswear bearing her eight-month-old son's name, gossip site Socialitelife reports.
She follows in the footsteps of a long line of showbiz parents to design baby brands.
Most recently, actress Denise Richards announced her Kidtoure line - a rival to estranged husband Charlie Sheen's Sheen Kidz collection, which debuted in April.

In a dream marriage of music and fashion, Madonna, has joined up with fashion giant H&M to supply a complete off stage wardrobe for her entire touring troupe including her band, dancers, crew members and the Material girl herself, it was announced today by H&M.
With a shared philosophy of diversity and fashion freedom, "Team Madonna" participants will be free to choose clothing from H&M's extensive 2006 collection.
Madonna, whose Confessions Tour opened on May 21st, will be dressed by famed designer Jean-Paul Gaultier while on-stage looks forward to being equally fashionable when she steps off the stage in H&M.
"Partnering up with H&M feels like a perfect fit. We'll all get to express ourselves in our own individual ways. The dancers and I are excited to go shopping together," stated Madonna.
Other aspects of the collaboration between H&M and the artist will include a specially designed Madonna track suit which will be available in H&M stores in mid August as well as an advertising campaign featuring Madonna and her legendary dancers.

"If there is an American dream, this is it for me," Francisco Costa shared at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards Monday night when he accepted the trophy for Womenswear Designer of the Year from Scarlett Johansson.
The Calvin Klein designer edged out Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough of Proenza Schouler and no-show Marc Jacobs to clinch the CFDA's top award less than three years after he became head designer for the illustrious house.
"To me, it's an American dream already," Costa told ELLE.
"The recognition is there.
The Calvin Klein legend is phenomenal and I have to take it forward my way.
I have to do my own thing with respect to the past."

Fashion Fringe announced its four finalists this morning, having searched for London's brightest talent since April.
Gavin Douglas, Stephen Harper, Six and Seven Eighths and Antonio Santana were among the 10 semi-finalists whittled down from more than 270 entries - and now they'll be up against each other on the catwalk during London Fashion Week in September in a bid to win the third Fringe title.
"We feel that the four we have selected are true to the Fashion Fringe ideal and will produce a fantastic show at London Fashion Week in September, and beyond," said Jonathan Saunders, who was joined on the panel by Joseph Velosa, Susannah Frankel and Susanne Tide-Frater.
