Zara Taking the Lead in Fast-Fashion

Zara: Taking the Lead in Fast-Fashion

When it comes to quick response to clothing trends, this Spanish retailer is beating the pants off H&M and everyone else.

Zara's secret? It moves fast.

With an in-house design team based in in La Coruńa, Spain, and a tightly controlled factory and distribution network, the company says it can take a design from drawing board to store shelf in just two weeks.

That lets Zara introduce new items every week, which keeps customers coming back again and again to check out the latest styles.

Zara's success is all the more surprising because at least half its factories are in Europe, where wages are many times higher than in Asia and Africa.

But to maintain its quick inventory turnover, the company must reduce shipping time to a minimum.

The fast-fashion approach also helps Zara reduce its exposure to fashion faux pas.

The company produces batches of clothing in such small quantities that even if it brings out a design that no one will buy -- which happened during an unseasonably warm autumn in 2003 -- it can cut its losses quickly and move on to another trend.

Snowboard Wear Carves Out a Place for Fashionistas

Snowboard Wear Carves Out a Place for Fashionistas

The powder may be melting on local mountains, but snowboarding's influence on what people wear continues long past the point when the chairlifts shut down.

Even hard-core brands like Sapient Snowboards and Arson/Orb have expanded streetwear lines, the former with a range of punk-edge Ts and hoodies, the latter with such stylish touches as gathers and ties on its screen-printed tanks and Ts for women.

"A lot of great companies come from here because they're inspired by what's around us," says Arson's Jordan Junck from his head office in Richmond, pointing out that having three local mountains, the ocean, and a world-class ski resort just an hour-and-a-half away make the Vancouver area a natural hotbed of 'boarding design.

"For us, we started out predominantly in outerwear and that was the foundation, but the brand sort of worked into a lifestyle brand as well-and that's the transition happening within the whole industry as well."

Pantone View Colour Planner 2007 2008 Color Forecast

Pantone View Colour Planner 2007 2008 Color Forecast

Pantone, the global authority on color and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, today announced the release of the Winter 2007/2008 edition of the PANTONEView Colour Planner - its cross-discipline color forecasting tool - titled "Metamorphosis."

Fall/Winter 2007/2008 emphasizes a season of change, transformation, mutation and shift.

And while there are no rules to follow in the traditional sense, designers can look for that breath of fresh air without being afraid that they've missed something.

For next year, it's about creating fresh concepts and fresh solutions by taking a fresh approach.

"The design industries look to Pantone to provide color direction," explains Tod Schulman, vice president of the fashion, home and interiors division at Pantone.

With the PANTONEView Colour Planner, we are forecasting 18 to 24 months ahead of each season.

This product plays an important role in influencing color direction for companies across a broad range of industries and around the world."

According to Pantone, there has been a calming down of color over the last few seasons and the same still holds true for Winter 2007.

While the fashion industry has moved away from strong multi-color usage, the environments that surround us are taking an opposite approach.
