Fashion Study Shows French Getting Bigger

Fashion Study Shows French Getting Bigger

French men and women are getting taller and heavier, and the average woman in France has gone up a dress size since 1970, according to a major fashion industry study released Thursday that measured about 12,000 people nationwide using 3-D imaging.

The study, commissioned by a French fashion industry association, aims to help clothing designers understand the sizes and shapes of their clients.

The industry's last major measurement campaign was in 1970, and France's current sizes are out of date, said Jean-Pierre Mocho, head of Pret a Porter Paris, the fashion expo where the study's results were released.

"Nobody should feel confused or abnormal if he doesn't fit perfectly into the sizes that are being offered," Mocho said.

Rookies Take Over the Swedish Fashion Scene

Rookies Take Over the Swedish Fashion Scene

The Rookies trade fair is one of the most eagerly anticipated shows during Stockholm Fashion Week.

This is when up-and-coming fashion designers get their chance to shine; grabbing the attention of fastidious fashion buyers and the press.

Fashion-guru Anna Blom picks out the hottest labels.

Created by three sisters, Karin Söderlind, Kristina Tjäder and Sofia Malm in 2004, Dagmar is one to watch.

Named Rookie Company of the Year by the Swedish Fashion Council in 2005, the label is also nominated in the best newcomer category at the Swedish Elle awards.

The Dagmar sisters say their clothes should last more than one season.

Karin Söderlind says: "The time span of a garment is an essential part of its quality, together with the choice of material and how it is made. We try to avoid short-lived fashion trends."

Last season, Dagmar used materials like baby camel wool, an exclusive wool from the first shave of the baby camel often used by luxury international brands.

"We love working with fine, living fabrics - that's our passion. The handicraft and eye for detail is typically Swedish for us," Söderlind says.

Global Fashion Local Tradition On the Globalisation of Fashion

Global Fashion Local Tradition: On the Globalisation of Fashion

The future of fashion; in essence, this is the theme of the collection of photographs and essays in Global Fashion Local Tradition edited by Jan Brand and José Teunissen.

The topics vary dramatically spanning everything from the global proliferation of the "Fashion Week" concept to exposes on - and catwalk images of - designs by some of the most acclaimed contemporary international designers.

However, throughout this visually and intellectually stimulating volume runs the theme of the interconnectedness of it all, and it offers suggestions as to where this may be leading us.

Sometimes, the combination of cultures and influence is plain to see, such as in the images of John Galliano's extremely colorful and grandiose designs.

His fantastically eclectic runway creations combine everything from Arabic textiles to Russian folk art.

The models fill the foregrounds of the photographs with skirts so complexly layered they could only be supported by the most rigid under-wiring.

The multitude of hues in their clothes and accessories are amplified by the bright and colorful runway lights in the background.
