New Talents Kick Off Week of Fashion in Milan

New Talents Kick Off Week of Fashion in Milan

Milan kicked off a week of catwalk glamour on Saturday with shows by four young fashion talents which organisers hope will help the city secure a position at the industry's cutting edge.

Slick Milan has long been a fashion hub, packed with heavyweights from Gucci to Prada, but the city has increasingly had to jostle with Paris, New York and London for the attention of the world's media and the purse-strings of top buyers.

Organisers say their NUDE -- or New Upcoming Designers -- initiative will help boost the city's profile and provide a trampoline for young talents just starting out, much like London's Fashion Fringe.

"The situation is tough at the moment, the market is blocked by these big names," 26-year-old Italian Bianca Gervasio said before the Milan debut of her eponymous collection.

"But Milan is definitely helping us. It's stimulating and the fact they do something is already great."

Gervasio, who works as a consultant at fashion house Mila Schon, sent out her models in breathy chiffon dresses and separates paired with rubber boots and glass bubble tiaras.

Her show-stopping numbers included bowling ball handbags and a dramatic silver satin dress with a folded collar and a black, kidney-shaped wrap, worn with metallic wellingtons.

"What we can do is take little steps, creating hand-made unique piece

Pantone Fashion Color Report Fall 06

Pantone Fashion Color Report Fall 06

Just as day turns to twilight, Fall 2006 colors are a subtle deepening of the world around, lit with the final glow of the turning horizon.

New York designers have found themselves in a sanctuary of color, filled with the constancy of nightfall.

Neutrals take center stage as a soothing reminder of life's many reassurances: from frost gray, evocative of a quiet winter morning, to apple cinnamon, the essence of freshly brewed tea.

The neutrals, while simple, provide a landscape for complexity.

The touches of rich tones in the palette add an exotic dimension to the neutrals, especially relevant as accessories continue to prevail.

The combination of pale khaki and red mahogany tells the story of a classic book, bound with a velvet ribbon.

Vetiver paired with purple magic is a plush couch decorated with a silk pillow.

Warmth and vibrancy have found a way to harmonize.

This season's orange, golden ochre, goes to the warm side with an umber undertone and a touch of elegance.

Mineral red adds an inviting sense of intrigue when used against a background of simply taupe, a basic yet

London Fashion Week Gets Into Its Stride

London Fashion Week Gets Into Its Stride

London Fashion Week kicked off on Tuesday with a star-studded line-up amid hopes that the show can give Paris, Milan and New York a run for their money.

A total of 170 designers will show off their creations for autumn and winter in almost 50 shows over the festival's five days at London's Natural History Museum.

Top designers Julien MacDonald, Paul Smith, Jasper Conran, Betty Jackson and Nicole Farhi are joined by hotly-tipped newcomers such Gareth Pugh during the week, which attracts more than 5,000 buyers and journalists.

On Tuesday, Dublin-born Paul Costelloe was the first of a string of designers to launch their collections.

Dublin-born Costelloe took post-war London as his starting point to add a Forties feel to tweed suits, military coats, cosy knits and high waist trousers.

MacDonald, who honed his skills at Chanel and Givenchy before creating his own line, will show his collection on Tuesday night.

Organiser the British Fashion Council has changed the event's dates so that it competes almost head-to-head with the big-budget Milan fashion week, which begins next week.

"London is one of the world's great creative capitals and this season's designer line-up reflects this more than ever," said Hilary Riva, the council's chief executive.

Electrolux Fashion Award 2006

Electrolux Fashion Award 2006

In a giant leap to merge fashion with appliances, Electrolux launched its fashion award at the 100th edition of the Salon Prêt-à-Porter Paris. And experimented with dressing up appliances.

You are what you wear, or so the saying goes. Fashion is perhaps the best way individuals have of expressing themselves, their personalities and their values.

Electrolux, in an attempt to break out of the "white box" business, was at the renowned fashion event Salon Prêt-à-Porter Paris this year to award the fashion designer collection that best represented the values of the company.

The Electrolux design values have been defined through extensive and ongoing consumer insight research, which has involved thousands of households throughout the world.

They are: Intuitive, Simplicity, Purity, Reassuring, Humanizing and Freedom.

All standholders at the Salon were eligible for the Electrolux award.

A committee of fashion consultants chose nominees.

Eventually, after many voting processes, the nominees were narrowed down to eight, at which time the Electrolux jury voted on the winner: Pauw, a Dutch fashion house.
