![]() Harris Tweed Hebrides is Scotland's Textile Brand of the YearHarris Tweed Hebrides has won recognition from fashion leaders for the style and quality of its famous fabric. The Company, based on the Isle of Lewis, has been named Textile Brand of the Year at the 2009 Scottish Fashion Awards. The sought-after prize, presented at a red-carpet event at historic Stirling Castle in Scotland, is a significant milestone, underling the Company's work with a new generation of edgy designers. HTH employs more than 40 people at the Shawbost mill and now accounts for more than 90 per cent of Harris Tweed production. Founded only 18 months ago, it produced its first tweed in June 2008. Harris Tweed Hebrides overcame competition from long-established companies on the short list including Johnstons of Elgin, Hawick Cashmere and Pringle of Scotland to win the award, which was accepted by the Chairman of Harris Tweed Hebrides and former UK Trade Minister, Brian Wilson, and the Company's Creative Director, Mark Hogarth. "This is fantastic recognition for everything that has been achieved at Shawbost over the past 18 months," said Mr. Wilson. We were delighted just to be bracketed alongside great companies like Johnstons of Elgin and Hawick Cashmere anyway, but to win the award was totally unexpected." He added that the generic Harris Tweed brand remained "incredibly strong around the world" and that Harris Tweed Hebrides had tried to add value to the brand through collaborations with cutting-edge designers in the fashion, interiors and accessories sectors. more www.har... ![]() Ying Gao: 2009 Recipient of the Phyllis Lambert Design Montreal GrantThe Mayor of Montreal, Gerald Tremblay, has awarded the Phyllis Lambert Design Montreal Grant to university professor and fashion designer Ying Gao.Created in honour of Phyllis Lambert, Founding Director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA), the $10,000 grant will enable Ying Gao to design "modulatable" garments, whose construction will be directly inspired by transformations in the urban environments of Berlin and Nagoya, both of which share UNESCO City of Design status with Montreal. In addition, the Ville de Montreal will contribute $5,000 to assist the recipient in promoting and disseminating her project. "The Phyllis Lambert Design Montreal Grant allows us to encourage designers whose approaches have a community aspect that is enriching for our city. In turn, it helps raise the profile of talented young creators in Montreal and abroad," Mayor Tremblay said, adding that Ying Gao is a worthy ambassador for Montreal and that her project sparks exchanges between members of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The jury members were unanimous in acknowledging the relevance of the link between the research project and the chosen cities (Berlin and Nagoya), and in their enthusiasm for picking this candidate. "Ying Gao has a decidedly avant-garde approach to fashion design, linking it to transformations taking place in cities. Moreover, her research encompasses several fields: fashion, textile technology, architecture, urban planning, interactivity and multimedia." more Ying Gao: 2009 Recipient of the Phyllis Lambert Design Montreal Grant added by Levent OZLER |
![]() New SDC Product: Metameric SamplesA set of metameric samples has been produced by the SDC which form a simple and effective educational tool for use anywhere that colour plays a vital role.It is a fact that two coloured fabrics which match when viewed under one light source may differ under another light source - a phenomenon known as illuminant metamerism. Until now, there has been no cost-effective product on the market to demonstrate metamerism using textile samples. In the new SDC product, the set of four cotton samples demonstrates illuminant metamerism, through a careful selection of dyes. This is best demonstrated in a light cabinet containing D65 (artificial daylight), TL84 (fluorescent store light) and tungsten light sources. The metamerism is also evident even without the use of a light cabinet, which makes this product ideal for use by both industry and educational establishments. "Metamerism is one of the most misunderstood concepts in colour communication and difficult to explain verbally," commented Andrew Filarowski, the SDC technical officer. "This is what industry told us and we knew from our own experience from our colour courses. This set of dyed fabric samples in a handy A4 size was therefore developed so that the visual effect could be shown and used in all industries." more www.col... (41) added by Levent OZLER |
![]() Arise Africa Fashion Awards: African Fashion Celebrates TalentLast night more than 1000 fashion insiders and their guests descended on the Sandton International Convention Centre in Johannesburg to celebrate the fashion talent of Africa at the inaugural Arise Africa Fashion awards.Walking away with the joint top prize of Designer of the Year was South African David Tlale and Nigerian Tiffany Amber. They both win a place on the catwalks of Mercedes Benz New York Fashion Week in September of this year, as part of the Arise African Fashion Collective show. As hosts, Dr Precious Moloi Motsepe, from African Fashion International (AFI), and Nduka Obaigbena, Arise founder and THIS DAY GROUP chairman, said their welcome speech, "change in Africa will not come through politics, but through the people." This was a theme of the evening that was echoed in the moving speech by former first lady of France, Cecilia Attias, who spoke of her belief that women will offer the real solutions to the issues of Africa and quoting Desmond Tutu and his definition of Ubuntu, saying that "a person is a person through other persons." And so it was with fashion in Africa last night, as designer, models, producers, media and buyers from the four regions of Africa and across the world, came together in an unprecedented demonstration of African unity to celebrate the diversity and cultural authenticity of this continent's fashion in the context of a world-class, 21st century fashion aesthetic. more www.afr...
